Teaching kids is like constructing a building.

You start with a flat piece of ground

that in a relatively short period of time, you turn into a beautiful, useful building that all
participants will be proud of and that will be used for
decades.
My role as teacher is of the project manager. My
lesson plans are the blueprints or plans for how we, the class
and I think the building will be constructed. Ill be there to
guide the subcontractors the students! around the known
pitfalls like too shallow a foundation! and to keep them on
schedule. "lanning which subcontractor will commence
working on their specific area of the building. The difficult
component of the project managers function is deciding how
to overlap their work to get much accomplished in a short
period of time, without having so many pieces of the building
being built as to cause confusion and frustration. This is very
much a layering effect.
The most important element of the building is the
foundation. #espect for each other, $ocabulary of the
content area, Teaching the strategies to read for
understanding,! It must not only be strong
enough to support the building as currently envisioned, but also support any
additions conceived along the %&&'year life of the building. (s you e)cavate

materials they will use for their piece of this giant jigsaw pu//le, Their knowledge,
abilities and relationships! and room must be made for all.
(nother aspect of the "M job is to keep the +uilding 0wner "arents! appraised
of the progress of construction. To work with the owners to solve problems with the
building, such as an underground spring, which would necessitate redesigning the
foundation. 0r perhaps changing the lighting to better illuminate the beauty of the
structure. The "M must always keep in mind that this building is the 0wners pride and
1oy, which the owner has already put an incredible amount of time, energy and love into
the building before it even went out for bids.
