Activity #2/ Resource List

October 26, 2013
SEI 523

This resource list includes community resources and recommendations for
Jane and her family based on conversations with the family and the RBI conducted
on Friday October 11
th
, 2013.
To help minimize in-class behavior with Jane and Sarah:
Recommend switching her lunch break (typically at 1:00pm/naptime) with
her co-teacher (at 11:30am) Rationale: This would give Jane a break while
Sarah is awake and give her a chance to leave the room and have Sarah
interact socially in the room with other caregivers.
Recommend switching her planning time from naptime to the 9-10:30am
spot. (This would be once a week and require switching with another
teacher).
Focus her required 40-hour training on classroom techniques and
management, childrens temperament and childrens health. These classes
are taught through self-directed packets, DVDs and in-person trainings. The
classes are required through State of Maine Child Care Licensing and will be
paid for by Janes employer and she will be giving comp time for all classes
taken. These classes will also connect Jane with professionals that she can
ask personal questions or get suggestions. Classes can be found at:
Child Care Options: http://skcdc.org . Classes include Why Do They
Misbehave: Nutrition, Rest and Balance", "Identifying & Addressing
Challenging Behavior, Setting Effective Limits for All Children
Maine Roads to Quality Early Childhood Training Calendar:
http://ecetrainingcalendar.muskie.usm.maine.edu/public/main.aspx .

To Encourage Quality Time with Emily and Sarah:
We recommend taking a day off (using vacation time or comp time from
trainings) to spend with Emily. We would encourage Jane to still drop
Sarah off at childcare for the day and then spend the day with Emily.
Going to a movie or just spending one-on-one time with her. This could
be done every couple of months depending on school schedule of Emily
and classroom coverage for Jane. By using comp time, the time will be
paid for Jane and she will not need to worry about finding a babysitter.
To promote positive activities with Sarah and Emily, we recommend
mommy and me dance classes, swim classes, and gymnastics for both
girls. Places we found include:
o Terpsicore Dance: Located in Portland and offering Mommy and
me dance classes, which are free.

ew-course&course=mommy-and-me-dancing
o Cumberland County Gymnastics: Offers classes for toddlers
through teen. Also offers weekend classes. When contacted said
they have worked out payment plan options for families.
http://www.ccgcmaine.com.
o Maine Academy of Gymnastics. Also offers classes for toddlers
through teen. Also offers Open gym, which is offered at $9/hr per
child and offered for ages 1-13. http://www.maineacademy.com
o The YMCA: Offers sliding fee scale, swim classes, and childcare
while you are taking classes.
http://www.ymcaofsouthernmaine.org/portland-ymca
o City of Portland offers swim classes for babies, children and adults.
Portland residents receive discount and scholarships are available
for those that qualify.

To encourage self-improvement/health:
In the light of how busy Jane is we would recommend taking classes that
would focus on Jane and her own well-being.
Portland Adult Ed offers cooking, exercise and several lifestyle classes
at a reduced rate for Portland residents. Many classes are offered
nights and weekends so care for Emily and Jane would be needed.

A great support and resource for Jane that we found is a community of
moms called Mom-to-Mom of Maine. This group offers a network of
support for moms that include discussion forums, special events, and
community service. The mission is, Mom to Mom of Maine is an
organization of diverse mothers devoted to helping each other and the
community by sharing support, knowledge, fun and volunteerism.
This is a great way for Jane to reach out and connect with other moms
and create a support network for her families needs.

To Address Sarahs sleep issues:
Our first recommendation is the possibility of trying to move Sarahs
bed out of Janes room and into a shared room with Emily.
Speak to Sarahs pediatrician about sleep issues related to possible
health or other recommendations for sleep for Sarah.
Maine Health offers a Sleep Issues class for parents and caregivers.
This will not be offered until Spring but when it is offered information
can be obtained at http://www.mmc.org
Additional reading materials are being gathered for Reading
