Children's Museum in Oak Lawn
My visit was to the Children's Museum in Oak Lawn" located in 5100 Museum Drive,
Oak Lawn, Illinois 60453,773.423.6709. The cost of the entrance is children $8 each, adults $8
eaclr, seniors (55+;
$6 each, teachers $3 each (with valid teacher I.D.) and children under one are
always free. There is also a membership that can be purchased child for $35 eactr, grandparents
$85, family $95 and all in the family $125. Teachers can also take their class for a field trip to
the museum. These are some of the specialty exhibits, Moo Cafe, Dream a Dream Theatre,
Friendly Market Tremendous Tunes Treehouse and a creativity activity section. Important
information about the museum is that every program and every exhibit at the Children's Museum
is created with the Common Core standards. These are the saure standards that the Illinois Board
of Education requires local school districts to use when developing local curriculum. This
allows the Children's Museum to be hands on learning to the children.
The following are some ofthe math and seience exhibits that are available for children
2-8 years ofage.
o
The spiral - which is an activity of gravity that makes objects like balls, fall down. The
Earth's gavtty attracts objects toward it. This exhibit can be used as both math and
science.
r
Static vs gravity
*
the big beads fall when you spin the disks, but the small beads don't.
That's because size can affect the way a material behaves. This exhibit can be used as a
math and science.
o
Size makes a dif[erence
-
magnet moves the material in water. This exhibit can be used
as a math and science activity.
o
Move It - children will learn about gravity, motion, momenfum, force and energy. Roll
the ball down the ramp and see if you can make it in the bucket. This activity can be
used as a math and science activiW.

Tummy Time
-
Infants and toddlers go over, under, around, bhind, in front of and
through to develop spatial pre-math skills.
Air Maze - Kids will experiment with the force of air and cause/effect as they push a
brightly colored cloth or ball into the Air Maze. This exhibit can be used for both math
and science.
Friendly Market
-
There is a scale the children put objects and see how it balances. This
activity can be used both math and science.
Race is on Dictionary
-
When you release the ball and it rolls down the ramp, its
potential energy becomes kinetic energy. Gravity it makes the things fall down,
momentum it's a combination of speed and mass, friction its force slows down one
moving past the other. This activity can be usd both math and science.
Motions in a dish
-
The children place a ball somewhere on the ramp and let go. This
activity can be used both math and science
Ski Jump
-
The children place a ball on each ramp at the same height and let go. This
activity can be used both math and science.
Hit the bucket
-
Push the button on the left side of the track to get the bucket moving.
Roll a ball down the fack and try to make it land in the bucket. This exhibit can also use
as a math activity by counting the balls that go in and also for science.
The stairs also can be used as a math activity, the stairs have numbers printed on them,
the children can count going up the second floor.
Block area
-
has various blocks for different math activities.
Sand and Water area
-
for science activities
The children will experience hands on activities in all the exhibits in the museum.
For the museum being small I believe children would enjoy every part of it and obtain
knowledge in all the exhibits. All the exhibits ur" ruf*
me created so that- pbildren can experience it without the help of an adult. My overall
tn{''
experience of
hjvisit
to the Children's Museum was phenomenal, I had my son of 8
\J
yeffs of age accompany me he enjoyed every exhibit and was annzed of what some of
the exhibits can do. If an 8 year old enjoyed it I know the younger children will also
t.,
enjoy it as well. I would not change anything most of the exhibits were both for m*h and
science.
A Math and Science Exhibit that I would add to the museum is for mafh a music
an exhibit with music. For science an exhibit wi& objects of the nafure likes aaimals and
plants.
