Assignment #2
Answer all the questions.
Adhere to the usual notations.

PART A

Q1. What is the motivation behind the modulation of digital signals?

Q2. Using suitable constellation diagrams and graphs compare the spectral efficiency vs. error
probability trade off in different linear modulation schemes.

Q3. Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) is a widely used modulation scheme including in
GSM cellular systems. Clearly and completely explain the modulation and demodulation
principle in GMSK.

Q4. Explain the different demodulation (detection) schemes for liner modulated digital signals.
Compare and contrast them.

Q5. What is the requirement for channel coding? Compare the two main classes of channel codes in
terms of their encoding/decoding complexity and the bit error rate performance.

Q6. Consider a regular systematic linear block code defined by a parity check matrix H. State the
structure of the parity check matrix. Hence define the corresponding generator matrix.

Q7. Low density parity check (LDPC) codes are employed in channel coding 4G wireless systems.
What are the special properties of LDPC? Using proper diagrams, compare its BER performance
to that of Hamming codes, BCH codes and Reed Solemon codes.

Q8. Explain the encoding and decoding principles of a convolution channel code.

Q9. Consider a (7,4) linear block code with the generator matrix,

Find the codeword set, minimum distance and the parity check matrix of this code. Hence find the
syndrome vector for a received bit sequence of 1 1 0 1 0 1 1
.

Q10. What is a Trellis? Explain its importance in channel decoding.

PART B

Invented in 1993, Turbo codes are providing near Shannon limit performance. They are employed in a
wide variety of applications including CDMA cellular systems. Refer the attached paper and
summarize the principle of Turbo encoding and decoding.
