The experience log is a detailed account of the levels and types of activities completed in the field. The candidates will objectively document their experiences. The log will have the following parts: time spent on experience, detailed description of experience, role played during experience, reflection on experience (what was learned during the experience), how experience impacts student learning, relationships among factors that impact student learning with references to current research literature, relationships built via the experience (when appropriate). This extensive log provides an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate best practices and make connections between current research issues and school-level practice. An entry into the experience log will be completed at the end of every day. The cooperating SLMS will have access to the final log and use it in addition to the final checklist to evaluate the internship.

Continue to learn how important relationships are to the job and how making connections can future collaborations. Students benefit from a well- connected staff. One where collaborations happen frequently. The library media program can be a valuable asset to the teacher and everyone else in the school who is seeking to cultivate motivation through success, curiosity, originality and relationships. (Donham, 2008 7/7/14 8:00-9:15 Tour of school/video room/ library facility/ equipment I got to understand the building and the library media center. I was able to learn all the different spaces of this huge school. It was great for me to see how the library really is the heart of this school. It is filled with so many tools for students and teachers. Students need a faculty who understand the school and the resources it has and uses them to best increase student learning. Todays librarians are experts in integrating appropriate technology across all curriculum areas. (Barrata, 2011) 7/7/14 9:15-10:00 Introduction with IT specialist to forms and AV cataloging that is done here. While MCPS has an IT specialist to help support the media center not all schools have that role. It was important for me to understand the specialists job for it is a role I may take on one day. Important for me to see the types of forms that are used when cataloging AV equipment and form that are used for trouble shooting tech issues. An organized technology specialist can better serve the needs of students and staff and help to infuse technology into student learning. School libraries should be "built by professionals who model leadership and best practices for the community to ensure that learners are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the technological society of the 2Ist century" (Johnston, 2014) 7/7/14 10:00-10:30 Introduced to their Destiny system and helped with book check in and check out. I helped with library media organization while learning a system that will be integral to my three weeks in MCPS. I learned the destiny system and I am more familiar with it for my work in the days to come. In order for the student to access materials quickly and easily the LMS needs to be familiar with destiny. The ultimate purpose of collection development is to make materials accessible to users. (Bishop,2007) 7/7/14 10:30-11:00 We went over the rubric and what I facilitated going over the rubric and Important for my mentor to Students will benefit from a staff LMS works in collaboration activities I would be able to cover this week. explaining any categories to my mentor. understand my role so I can be used effectively in the library. that understands their roles and how to work with each other. with each staff member to evaluate job descriptions on a daily basis (AASL, Empowering Learners, 2009) 7/7/14 11:00-11:30 My mentor had to step out for a meeting and I helped the IT specialist supervise the LMC I made sure students were on task and locating materials that they needed. I helped process book check ins. It was great for me to have some time to supervise the LMC and start to get to know the students. Students need support in the LMC in order to use its materials in the most effective way. Access to information involves both intellectual and physical access. Physical access refers to an environment that permits the unimpeded location and retrieval of information. (Bishop, 2007) 7/7/14 11:30-12:30 Helped mentor begin the creation of the Black Eyed Susan Instructional project she is making for the teacher of the child development I helped edit the power point that was printed and collaborated with my mentor as we devised the lesson that could be used with the younger students. I loved getting to help create resources that would benefit a teacher and his/her class. When the LMS can take one thing of a teachers plate that teacher can focus on students and their learning in a more efficient manner. When teachers and LMSs engage in coordinated instruction, all members of the school community benefit: teachers, class. LMSs, administrators, and students. (Buzzeo, 2008) 7/7/14 12:30-1:00 Sorted and started to organize promethean materials. I was in charge of creating loaner materials for teachers who lost their promethean packets. I continue to learn how important organization is even of instructional materials in the LMC. Students benefit when teachers have access to technology which can benefit their instruction. This responsibility means that students must be taught the skills they need to go beyond simply knowing how to use technology tools to understanding how to apply them. (Johnston, 2013) 7/7/14 1:00-2:00 All staff meeting about the end of session on, feedback from survey. I was introduced to the entire staff and learned about their end of session one procedures. I got to see how important feedback is to the LMC. Teaches were surveyed about the helpfulness of the LMC. When teachers can use feedback to improve their services and instruction students in turn benefit. The library must be the heart of the school and the teacher- librarian must be a proactive team player (Brown,2004) 7/7/14 2:00-2:30 Scheduling We worked on scheduling teachers I was surprised how engaged teachers Students will benefit from the use While the library media program LMC time and computer lab time for the week. were with the scheduling process and how many of them were very proactive in making sure they got the time their class needed. of tools to help aid them in their research. has a curricular agenda of its own for information literacy, it is best when integrated into the rest of the school curriculum. (Donham, 2008) 7/7/14 2:30 3:00 Lunch 7/8/14 7:00-8:00 Organizing for the day and scheduling staff for the labs We continued to work on the schedule as teachers came in this morning to schedule time to come into the media center and the labs. It is apparent that having an open schedule that all know how to access works! Students benefit from a multimodal approach to learning and infusing computer time and library time into their day can increase this! All the small daily tasks done in the background that contribute to the overall maintenance and outward credibility of the school library program. (Busch, 2011) 7/8/14 8:00-8:45 Substituting with mentor for a classroom teacher Due to a local fire many teachers were late to work. We had to substitute this morning b/c of this incident and not enough While the situation was less than ideal it was great to see how the school community came together to really make sure all Students benefit when there is a team of staff who hold the same ideals and are on the same page. The library must be the heart of the school and the teacher- librarian must be a proactive team player personnel were in the building. students were safe. (Brown,2004) 7/8/14 8:45-10:00 Lesson Prep/Lib guide creation Worked on a website this was a lib guide for todays lesson. With my mentors help we tried to create a document that was easy to navigate and access. Important to see the effects of planning ahead of time and how you can help the teacher to the best of your ability when you know what his/her goals are. Students can get the most out of their lesson when they are collaboratively planned and both parties are on the same page. Preparation and planning is necessary for the library media program to run smoothly. (Pappas, 2004) 7/8/14 10:00-11:30 Front Desk/ shelving Was at the front desk monitoring students and also shelving materials in the stacks. This reinforces how important a well- organized library is and the number of hats a librarian wears at one time. Students benefit from a well- organized library where they can access the information that they need.
Maintaining a collection is as important as circulating it. (Donham, 2008) 7/8/14 11:30-12:30 Co-Teaching Citation and Research Taught a lesson on citing sources and then helped classroom teacher with students research project in our computer lab. I learned a lot from my first high school lesson. They are definitely a different breed then my elementary school students but the lesson went better than I expected. Students experienced increased learning opportunities from Regardless of the grade level of the students you serve, collaboration is the mission and mandate of the LMS. (Buzzeo, 2008) 7/8/14 12:30-1:00 Lunch 7/8/14 1:00-2:00 Summer School Spread Sheet Work Worked on a spreadsheet to display the Destiny information we have been gathering about materials that are checked out and which students and staff need to make returns before the end of session 1. While Destiny is great it still has its quirks. I have been able to learn some of the quirks in the Destiny system and Andreas best practices for trying to get around them. Students and staff need relevant materials in the library. In order for this to happen materials need to be returned so others can check them out. The ultimate purpose of collection development is to make materials accessible to users. (Bishop,2007) 7/8/14 2:00-3:00 Readers Advisory/ Organization We spent some time helping students find books who were in the library and organizing our space and materials for tomorrow. Again, I am learning I need to really read up on high school books so I can become better at Readers Advisory. It was difficult for me to always tell students which book would be the best fit. It will be beneficial for students to have an organized space where librarians can access materials and have a media specialists who can recommend relevant and interesting books. Readers advisory is that age-old responsibility of the librarian to make the best effort to connect the right book to the right student at the right time. (Brodie, 2013) 7/9/14 7:00-8:00 Shelving materials I went and shelved books we had checked in the day before. Learning the inner workings of this library and it is useful to see how she has arranged her sections in different ways then other libraries I Students have a current collection that they are able to access easily. Shelving materials creates this type of environment. Maintaining a collection is as important as circulating it. (Donham, 2008) have been at. 7/9/14 8:00-10:15 Scheduling We found out that all the ESOL classes needed time in the media center for pull out testing. We had to rearrange and/or cancel other classes in order for this to occur. We also created a document to send to the ESOL teacher to determine what support they would need from the media center and the time length. I was amazed how complicated it was in order to change the schedule. It was great for me to watch how my mentor handles teachers who were upset with the changes. Students needed a space for testing where they could be under adult supervision but still be able to be pulled out by their regular classroom teacher for testing. Librarians promote student learning through technology, literacy, and collaboration with teachers.
(Dees, Dianne, et al. (2010) 7/9/14 10:15-11:30 Updated spread sheet for missing materials. Looked over spread sheet that we had created for students and teachers missing materials. I removed students and teachers who have turned in materials. There is a high need for organization in a library setting. I am still learning what organizational structures work best for me. By getting missing materials into the library we are able to make sure students have access to the full collection. As a program administrator media specialists are responsible for the management and evaluation of the collection. (Bishop,2007) 7/9/14 11:30-12:30 Lunch 7/9/14 12:30-1:30 Front Desk Supervision Helped check in and check out books I am learning how to work with high Students have a library staff member The school library program at the front desk. (AASL, Empowering Learners, 2009) 7/9/14 1:30-2:30 Finalized the end of Session 1 Check Out Procedures. We went through all the staff equipment applications labeled them for missing materials I am learning how to manage a summer session and the type of record keeping and organization that needs to take place in order to make sure everything runs smoothly. (Busch, 2011) 7/10 8:10-10:10 Helped monitor and support ESOL testing. District level staff had come to support testing; I made sure they knew what area to be in and what teacher to support. I also made sure to check in with the various testing sites in the library to ensure teachers ad all the materials they needed. I had never thought about the library being used as a testing center and what role the librarian would play. It was a great experience for me to help with the testing. Students needed a place that they could be monitored while their teachers pull them out individually for testing. The library was able to meet their needs. The library must be the heart of the school and the teacher- librarian must be a proactive team player (Brown,2004) 7/10 10:10-11:10 Shelving Shelved materials that had been previously checked out by students. (Bishop,2007) 7/10 11:10-12:30 Schedule Creation Created schedules in Microsoft word for summer session two. Computer lab schedules and media center schedules needed to be created. These schedules are used to communicate the media centers availability to teachers. They also are kept in the media center and help generate collaborations with teachers drop in to sign up. Technology is an important piece of the work world and of school. It is important that students work with technology to prepare for their role after high school. No matter what tool is used the most effective scheduling approach that every media specialist should use is collaborating with teachers when they schedule. (Anderson, 2012) 7/10 12:30-1:00 Lunch 7/10 1:00-2:00 Checking Teachers out, checking in student materials, sorting obligations As summer session comes to a close we need to check in teacher and student materials that had been used this session. We also need to sign teachers clearance sheets as they turn in their materials for session 1. I have never been in the position before where I was in charge of signing of on paperwork. It has definitely been a learning experience to be on the administrative side of things. When teachers understand what is expected of them they do not have to worry about the small details and can focus their attention on their students needs. Maintaining a collection is as important as developing it. Collection maintenance involves two major processes inventory and weeding. (Donham, 2008)
7/10 2:00-2:30 Organizing desk for tomorrow. Tomorrow may be a busy day for us with teacher check out throughout the morning and afternoon. We tried to prepare the desk and library areas for the day tomorrow. Its been great for me to be able to learn the organizational systems and set up from my mentor and I know that it will be useful when developing my own strategies. Organization helps the library infrastructure move smoothly. The smoother the library runs the more it can do to service the students of the school. Students need a library that has easily accessible and well organized materials. Students will come to the library more frequently when they know how to find the materials they need. (Hembree, 2013) 7/11 6:30-8:00 Talked with various teachers about check out requirements for today and also said my good byes with the staff. As teachers came in and out of the library this morning I touched base with them about media center check out procedures and said my goodbyes. Building relationships is an important part of any media center and healthy school climate. It has been great to work on my relationship building skills. An interconnected staff is one where collaboration is more likely to occur. These collaborations create lessons and projects that increase student learning. Teacher librarians have direct and support roles in their schools, often being the center of much work. (Marcoux and Loertscher, 2014) 7/11 8:00-8:30 Meeting with media assistant Touched base with media assistant so we could talk about the list of things to I am learning how another role of the Media Specialist is to work efficiently When tasks are delegated efficiently the media specialist can worry about LMS works in collaboration with each staff member to do today and how to best divide up the responsibilities. with his/her adult staff. Part of this is making sure tasks are delegated and communicated efficiently.

And which log ins were unassigned. Its been very useful for me to learn the technology components that this media specialist is in charge of. I may be in charge of very similar technologies at my future media center. In order for students to access computer programs, internet, and other technologies they need an active login. Our system allows for students to get their log in quickly and be able to access it if they forget it. School libraries should be "built by professionals who model leadership and best practices for the community to ensure that learners are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the technological society of the 2Ist century" (Johnston, 2014) 7/11 10:00-11:00 Shelving Shelved materials that had been previously checked out by students. (Donham, 2008) 7/11 11:00-12:00 Teacher Check Out Teachers came to the media center to return the materials they used for session one and get their clearance sheet signed. My understanding of check out procedures, forms, and systems has grown throughout this experience. Keeping records of the materials is extremely important and finding systems to ensure this is done properly is important. A well run library ensures that materials are returned in proper condition so they can be used by future staff to benefit students. Librarians promote student learning through technology, literacy, and collaboration with teachers.

They had orientation for the new teachers of summer school. They had handouts, power points, and a tour of the school in order for all of us to get acclimated to the building. It was nice for me to see how summer school starts out and the types of expectations they have for the teachers as well as hear about all the school rules. When teachers are on the same page about rules and procedures they can consistently reinforce them to students. Student benefit from clear and consistent rules and procedures. All library staff members are expected to continually learn new skills, stay in touch with new trends, and incorporate new technology into their work. Today he showed us around the space and talked to us about how he does things. Since this is not my mentors school it was great to hear from someone who works at paint branch to get a feeling for what the regular school year is like and how we may want to run things during the summer. Students will benefit from the media specialists understanding the space we were give and being able to find the materials to help students and staff. Librarians promote student learning through technology, literacy, and collaboration with teachers.

(Schiano 2013) 7/15 8:30-9:45 Google Drive Research My mentor and I did research on using Google drive in the classroom. We watched a tutorial video and went through a power point looking at how you can use it effectively. MCPS is heading towards all students and staff using google drive and one of our classes we will be working with tomorrow will be using it. While I do currently use Google Drive I had not been aware of all the uses you could have in an educational platform. It has been great to learn about the 2.0 program here at Paint Branch where students come to class only two days a week and do the rest of their work online via google drive. Students are able to take control of their learning through the use of digital media. They can collaborate with peers and the teacher in real time. When teachers understand how to teach with the technology it can really enhance student learning. All library staff members are expected to continually learn new skills, stay in touch with new trends, and incorporate new technology into their work. Continued to form relationships with this group of high school students. I have not had a lot of experience with publisher so working with it helped me refresh my skills. Students were able to get quicker feedback and help since there were two teachers coordinating the instruction. The most successful school library media specialists are those who collaborate with teachers as full partners in the instructional process. (Cooper and Bray, 2011). 7/15 12:15-1:30 Database research and pulling resources for class project My mentor teacher and I were preparing for a group project that will be in the media center tomorrow. We looked through the databases offered here and examined print resources to find Currently at a school without data bases so any and all work I can do to familiarize myself with them is very useful. Our work at the front desk helps materials circulate effectively and allows resources to reach students in all classes. Resources made available through the library media program, including the media specialists, should be made widely available to ensure that students and staff have access. (Bishop, 2007) 7/16 8:30-9:30 Showed me book selection/ordering procedures. Also discussed the library budget. We got to go on the ordering site for MCPS. We talked about the budget that media specialists get and the various ways to use it. Then we selected materials using various sources and then ordered them on the site. It is very useful for me to learn about budgeting. This is one facet of the library media center that I have not had a chance to experience in the classroom or on past observations. I also liked getting to walk through the whole process step by step. Having a collection that is relevant and up to date is important so the selection process is vital to a media center. Students benefit when this process is done frequently and deliberately. Evaluation can serve multiple purposes. Like assessment, evaluation can inform the library media specialist about what is working well and what needs improvement. It can also inform administrators about the program. (Donham, 2008) 7/16 9:30-10:45 Entering a new book into the DAE My mentor had two reference books he was adding to the collection. We went on the DAE so he could add a book that hadnt been preapproved by any other media center yet. Once it is preapproved it can be purchased by him or any other media specialist in the district.
Interesting for me to see the hoops a media specialist needs to jump through in order to have materials approved. This is an important process because your name is linked to that book/material after you upload it in the database. Students need interesting and current materials to read. Library media specialist must do the DAE process to get current books approved. Responsible collection development requires that broad consideration govern the evaluation and choice of a single item. (Bishop,2007) 7/16 10:45-11:20 Helped a variety of teachers, students, and visitors who needed help finding resources or accessing information via the computer We helped teachers with the printer, acquiring videos and audio books. We helped partners find reputable sources and format their presentations. Also clarified information as needed. Great experience for me to continue to learn how educators can effectively use Google Drive in the classroom. Students are able to collaborate with the partner in real time and both work on the same project. One of the hallmarks or coordination is that it goes beyond the instantaneous quality if cooperation. The advance planning allows consideration for the best way to meet students needs. (Buzzeo, 2008) 7/16 1:00-1:45 Discussion with resident media specialist Worked with resident media specialist learning about their databases and talking about google drive for education Continuing to learn about reasons why different data bases are a great resource to have and continuing to learn how to use Google Drive correctly. Students benefit when databases are thought out and aligned to projects they engage in during the year. For the instructional planning teams, the common purpose is to provide effective educational experiences (Donham, 2004) 7/17 7:00-8:30 Front Desk Supervision In the mornings I help supervise the front desk space.
