SECOND PERIODIC TEST IN ENGLISH V
SY 2013 2014
A. LISTENING PHASE

DIRECTION: Listen as the teacher reads the story aloud. Answer the question that follows. Choose
the letter of the correct answer.

THE UNGRATEFUL CROCODILE

One day in Libuangan Marsh, a greedy crocodile could not find any food. No creature, man or
animal ventured out in the marsh. The greedy crocodile has been sighted and everybody avoided the
marsh.
I would die of hunger in this place! said the crocodile. I have to get out and look for food.
The crocodile smiled to himself.
Who knows I might get something more delicious than my usual fare of fish. A young goat or a
carabao.
The crocodile heaved himself up from the marsh land. He crawled into the land. He went further
and further inland. But he saw no sign of food.
Why, this is harder than I thought. Im getting hungrier and hungrier. Im feeling too tired and
thirsty. My skin seemed to dry.
Foolish crocodile! He did not know he would die if he leaves the cool water of the marsh. The
bright rays of the sun shone on his thick hide. This made him tired and thirsty.
What am I to do? Im doomed! I cannot go any further. Im too tired and thirsty.
Then, an old farmer with his cart passed by and saw the crocodile helpless and almost dying on
the road.
Please help me! Take me back to the marsh. I will die here, cried the crocodile weakly.
But the farmer was afraid. The more he was scared when he saw the big jaws of the crocodile.
Please! Please help me! Im dying, pleaded the crocodile.
The farmer was kind-hearted. He took pity on the big animal on the road.
Promise not to eat me. I will take you to the river at the end of the road.
The crocodile nodded weakly. The farmer helped the animal crawl into his cart. But the crocodile
was terribly hungry. His stomach rumbled. He looked into the bony arms of the farmer. That too seemed
delicious!
At last the farmer came to the end of the road. A deep river carved into the land ahead. The farmer
pulled the crocodile out of the cart. The crocodile felt the strength back into his body when he touched
the cool water of the river. He felt strong enough to grab something to eat. He caught one of the
carabaos legs and dragged the poor animal into the river.
Let go, you ungrateful creature! You promised not to eat me. Look what you have done, cried
the old man.
I promised not to eat you. But I did not promise not to eat your carabao!
The old farmer was furious. The crocodile was actually biting into the carabaos leg. He saw his iron
crow bar in the cart. He got hold of it and hacked it with all his might into the crocodiles head.
The crocodile was stunned. He felt dizzy and loosened his grip in the carabaos leg. The carabao
sensed his leg was free. He pulled himself away from the water.
I promised to bring you to the river. But I did not promise not to beat you!
The farmer prodded the carabao to walk away. The crocodile felt sorry for himself. Not only was he
weary and hungry. His head was heavy and painful.
