Lesson plan to FRONT VOWELS

Warming-up
1) Self-introduction
I give a short self-introduction both in English and Chinese
2) Students’ self-introductions
The information should include their Chinese & English names, hometowns, hobbies, etc. Each
student has 2 minutes to present themselves in English.
3) Attendance question
American English is really popular all over the world. Even in Sias, we have really Americanised
environment, so why do you choose to learn British accent?
*The students are required to answer the question in English.
(The warming-up aims at getting to know the students & their English pronunciation. And the
warming-up activities should be limited in half and hour)

Pronunciation Clinic
1) The brief introduction of English phonemes (the number of vowels, consonants etc.)
2) Details teaching
I explain how to pronounce the four front vowels /i:/ /i/ /e/ /æ/, draw the picture of tongue
position on the blackboard, and present the differences between the four phonemes, words
patterns, words in sentences even in different texts.

Practices on pronunciation
1) Handout the handouts to let the students to read.
I hand out the handouts to the students, give them 2 minutes to read, later I go to each of them to
check and correct their pronunciation one by one.
2) Pair work
I divide the students into 4 groups. Each group writes three sentences, which contain the four
front vowels. Everyone will present the sentences he/she writes.

Group discussions
Topic: Are men really more powerful than women? Why?
The groups discuss this topic and let one person to present on the stage. I evaluate the content and
correct their pronunciation.

Coursework
1) Listening- Discrimination
2) Listening- Reading
I’ll send everyone two audio clips via e-mails. One is for listening- discrimination, the other is
for listening- reading. The student will do their coursework with listening to the audio clips. I’ll check
the answers next week.
