Validity is not a property which is possessed in any absolute sense.
It concerns inferences made about
the usefulness of a measures scores and means we are seeking to identify those which are fit for purpose. Validation is a process of structured investigation which gathers empirical evidence involving validity coefficients. Content validity evaluates how well items represent a domain of all possible items. Criterionrelated validity concerns a tests efficacy in making predictions and involves correlations with benchmark criteria. One form, predictive validity, is aimed at predicting behaviour, whilst concurrent validity evaluates whether a measure correlates significantly with relevant criteria. Construct validity has been seen as encompassing all of the other kinds of validity. It depends on all of the evidence gathered, and can also include convergent-discriminant, factorial, nominated group, incremental and differential validity.
