English101isacourseinthecriticalartsofreading,writing,reflection,anddiscussionwithanintroductionto
rhetoricandinformallogic.MeetsUniversityCoreCurriculumGoalA1:Composition/Speech.Prerequisites:
Completionof10
th
gradeinhighschool,2.5orhighercumulativeGPA,and2/3ofthefollowing:450SAT
verbal/writingor23ACToverall,rankin51%orhigherinclass,orappropriatewritingplacement.Basic
keyboardingskillsrequiredseeASBE121.

Inthisclass,ourfocuswillbeoncommunityandfamilyservice.Ourwritingsandreadingswillberelatedto
socialissuesandcommunityservice,andtypesofwritingproductsthatsupportthenonprofitorganizationswe
workwith.

Evenifyouarenotcompletingthecourseforcollegecredit,youwillbeexpectedtofulfillallcourse
requirements.StudentsworkingforCAPcreditwillhaveahigherperformanceexpectationandmayhave
alternativerubricsforsomeassignments.

DescriptionofRequiredCoursework
InallsectionsofENG101,studentsarerequiredtowriteatleast16pages(4500words)ofrevised,finished
prose,developedthroughaprocessofinvention,development,andrevision.Majorwritingpieceswillinclude

Analysis
Critique
Argumentation
Reflection

WewillwriteeachclassperiodinaWritersNotebook.YouMUSThavethisbookwithyouatall
times.Youmayleaveitintheroomifyouareafraidyoullforgetit.

Wewillbedoingotherwritingactivitiesinadditiontothemajorpieces.Wewillalsobereadingarticlesand
otherwrittenworktocomplementourwritingandtofulfilltheIndianaStateStandardsforseniorEnglish.

speakwithyou,callhome,referyoutoacounselor,oraskforaparentconference.Imayalsoelecttodo
nothing.Mygoalisnottopunishyou,buttohelpyoulearninasafeandproductiveenvironment.

PolicyonLateandMissedAssignments
IwillacceptlatewritingassignmentsandotherhomeworkuptotheFridayoftheweekitisduewitha10point
penaltyforeachdaytheassignmentislate.Ifyouwanttomakeupworkthatismorethanaweeklate,you
mustmakearrangementstocomeinduringaFLEXperiod.Anyworkcompletedoveraweeklatewillreceive
nohigherthanhalfcredit.

Ifyoumisspeerreview,youcannotmakeupthecreditforreviewinganotherstudentswork.However,you
canhavesomeonereviewyourpaperaccordingtothepeerreviewhandoutandturnthatinforcreditinyour
portfolio.

Thefinalwritingportfoliothatisdueattheendoftheyearwillnotbeacceptedlate.

Anyexceptionstothismustbediscussedwithmeonthedaytheassignmentisdueorbefore.Notbeingableto
thinkofsomethingtowriteaboutisnotanacceptablereasontonothaveyourwritingcompleted.Ifyouget
