UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
Identifying two dimensional shapes

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Student will be able to identify shapes in real life
Student will be able to apply properties of polygons
Students will be able to define properties of polygons

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all
subcategories of that category
MATERIALS:
Computer
Microsoft Excel

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
What are the key concepts for the lesson? Identifying attributes of two-dimensional figure.
What is the critical academic language (general and technical) that must be addressed in this lesson?
Polygon, square, rectangle, triangle
How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)? Previously lessons will have
talked about properties of lines
How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons? Students will classify two dimensional
polygons into hierarchy based on principles
Why will you need to plan differentiated activities or assessments? Students may finish early, be
advanced in learning, or behind

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: What will you do to help the students become focused or motivated to learn in this
teaching segment? I will show PowerPoint that includes examples of shapes in real life.

Procedures:
Each PowerPoint slide must contain the name of the shape, the definition, a picture of the shape,
and a picture of the shape used in real life. Create a title slide with your name, date, and class period.
You will have 4 PowerPoint slides in total. Be prepared to present your PowerPoint to your classmates
after completion.

5 min Bellwork draw rectangle, square, and rectangle

10 min lecture on shapes

5 min explanation of powerpoint assignment

20 min Powerpoint assignment

10 min student PowerPoint presentations
5 Closure Review of what students learned by completing Think Sheet

Closure: What do you have planned to close the lesson? Selected students will present their powerpoint
slides to the class. Students will summarize what they learned for the day on the Think Sheet

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Students will be assessed based on their PowerPoint slides and presentation
