Mrs.

Furgiones 7
th
Grade Civics Syllabus 2014/2015

Our Course Objectives:
The ultimate goal of this class is to provide students with a
well-rounded understanding of how the United States
functions as a country. Students will explore the rights and
responsibilities of American Citizens and the inner
workings of our federal, state and local governments, so to
better prepare them for entering a 21
st
Century United
States of America.

Whats that mean to me?
The first thing that I need you to understand is that this
class will be amazing, but know this is only with your help
and cooperation. The second thing that I need you to
understand is that this class is very important. One day, the 7
th
grade class of 2014/2015 will run this
country, its important to begin learning the inner workings! The knowledge and skills you acquire in this
class will help prepare you to be a working part of a 21st century United States of America.

In factthe content of the course is so vital, students will have to demonstrate mastery, by passing
an End of Course Exam (EOC) at the end of the year. Take a moment, read that bold part over again
and let it sink in....

Okay, now remember the first thing I mentioned: this class is amazing. We will have a great deal of fun-
and that will help you learn the content easily! We will laugh and yell, and dance and sing. We will move
around and share ideas. We will use technology often! We will have our share of laughs while learning,
but it is extremely important that when its time to move forward, that we are able to move forward. I need
you to show up on time, always be ready to follow the two policies below and it will be a GREAT year!

Classroom Policies:
Students are expected to abide by two (very simple) policies:
RESPECT YOUR SCHOOL, YOUR PEERS, YOUR TEACHERS, AND YOURSELF!
COME TO SCHOOL PREPARED TO TRY YOUR BEST & LEARN!

Grading
In this class you are not expected to be perfect, you are however expected to always try your best and put
forth an honest effort. Grades will be derived from tests, homework, group work, student service learning
hours/ projects, quizzes, current event reports, individual and class projects, along with class
assignments.

Absenteeism
It is the responsibility of each student to seek out missed assignments when a day of class is missed.
Assignments given prior to your absence are expected upon your returned. You are provided one
additional day for each day absent to complete missed work.

Late Work
I will accept work one day late for partial credit. Do not wait until the end of each quarter to complete
assignments. I will restate, if you put forth an honest effort, you should do just fine in this class. That
means completing work on time.

Rules
We have covered class rules throughout our first days together. They include but are not limited to: Being
respectful, being prepared, being productive, talking when needed, listening when needed, and staying in
our seats until we are directed to move. Be prepared to follow these rules throughout the year. The
consequences will meet the offense.

Dear Students,
I am excited for the year ahead and look forward to teaching you all there is to know about Civics.
Together we will laugh, learn, and enjoy an active learning experience. Remember though, respect
goes a long way in my classroom, when it is time for us to move on you should follow rules and be
prepared to learn. Heres to an amazing year together!
