Class Description:

This course is an integrated course for students learning Chinese at the middle level of Chinese. Each
lesson in the textbook has a topic with content that mainly introduces people's dialogue in daily life
including being a college freshman, living on campus, dining in a Chinese restaurant, shopping,
choosing your classes, relationships, using internet, internships, education system, Chinese geography,
and culture highlights between the Chinese and the West. This class will provide students with the
skills in basic grammar, vocabulary, idioms, phrases, sentence patterns, and practice in listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. Students can improve their Chinese language in these four skills after
finishing this course.

Class Objectives: Students will be able:

1. to develop their ability to engage in the Chinese four skills activities, which include
pronunciation exercises, reading and listening activities, grammar rules and sentence pattern
practice.
2. to enlarge and build up their vocabulary knowledge.
3. to develop the ability to write clear sentences with the correct use of grammar.
4. to develop and improve their reading comprehension on authentic reading material.
5. to summarize main ideas after given a conversation or a supplementary reading.
6. to develop the ability to create paragraphs and essays.
7. to express themselves accurately and appropriately through communicative exercises.
8. to develop interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication skills in Chinese.

By the end of the school year, students should be able to achieve Intermediate-High level
proficiency based on the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

1. Listeningstudents will be able to understand and comprehend longer conversations on a
number of topics involving different times and places.

2. Speakingstudents will be able to successfully handle most communicative tasks and social
situations. They can begin, continue, and end a general conversation with many strategies
appropriate to a range of circumstances.

3. Reading--students will be able to read a wide variety of authentic Chinese texts ranging from
ancient to modern writings, and be able to read consistently with full understanding of texts that
connect to a students daily life.

4. Writing--students will be able to meet most practical writing needs and requirements. They can
take notes on familiar topics and respond in writing to personal questions. They can also write
simple letters, brief summaries, and work and school experiences.

5. Culture Appreciationstudents will be able to broaden their views by comparing Chinese
cultural objects, practices, and perspectives with those of their own Western culture. They can
apply their language and cultural knowledge in the real world.


Required Textbook and Material:

1. Integrated Chinese Level 2, part 2 Textbook by Tao-chung Yao,
Yuehua Liu, Yea-fen Chen, Liangyan Ge, Nyan-ping Bi, and Yiaojun Wang.
2. Integrated Chinese Level 2, part 2 workbook by Tao-chung
Yao, Yuehua Liu, Yea-fen Chen, Liangyan Ge, Nyan-ping Bi, and Yiaojun Wang.
3. Three Ring Binders all students are expected to keep all of their work for the duration of the
school year.
4. Paper/pen/pencil

Class Requirements:

1. Attendance coming to class on time every week is important. The class schedule includes
classroom and off-campus instructions. You will be disqualified from this credit class if you
have 10 hours or more from either classroom or off-campus absences. If you are unable to
attend this class, please contact me ahead of time.

2. Homework you must do your homework before coming to class.
*Regular short assignments: homework from the workbook and supplemental assignments.
*No late homework will be accepted. Being absent is not an excuse for not turning in your
homework.
*Sloppily written homework or homework with too many errors will be returned to students for
re-submission, which should be made up on the following week. Homework is graded in 6
levels:
a. 90~100% : excellent work submitted on time.
b. 80~89%: good work submitted on time.
c. 70~79%: : average work submitted on time.
d. 60~69%:: re-submitted work of good quality.
e. 50~59%:: re-submitted work of average quality or returned work without re-submission.
f. below 59: unacceptable work, missing homework, or homework submitted late.

3. Quizzes/testsyou will have frequent quizzes and tests. There are one or two lesson quizzes
and one post-lesson test for each lesson. The lesson quiz is short pop quiz on vocabulary,
listening, speaking, or reading during the lesson being taught. The post-lesson test is a review
test following completion of each lesson. Be sure to be on time for the quizzes/tests at the first
period of class.

4. Participationyou must participate in class. If you are working in a group or with a partner,
please cooperate with your group. Always speak Chinese in class and raise your hand.

5. Preparednessplease come to class prepared by bringing with you the appropriate materials,
textbook, and completed homework.
6. Cell phonesplease turn off cell phones in the classroom.
7. No food or drinks are allowed in class.

Oral Performance:

The final presentations are a group project involving two or three students. The script for the
presentation should be typed and submitted one week before the scheduled presentation time.
Discussion of the script with the instructor is required before the oral presentation. Time for each
presentation is about five minutes per person. The presentation should be accompanied by
effective use of visual aids (photographs, videos, PowerPoint, drawings, etc.). Students will be
evaluated the required sentence patterns and vocabulary taught during the semester.

Grades:
Grading will be determined according to the following:
First Semester:

Quizzes: 12.5% (include listening, speaking, reading or writing)
Chapter Tests: 12.5% (include listening, speaking, reading or writing)
Homework: 25% (includes preview, presentation and writing, etc.)
Classroom participation: 14%
Mid-term Exam: 16%
Final Exam (included final oral performance): 20%

Second Semester:

The grade is calculated as following:
The total grade of quizzes, chapter tests, homework, classroom participation, midterm and
final examinations at second semester 50%
A written evaluation exam: 25%
An oral presentation: 25%

Grading is based on a total point system:
A= 90-100%
B= 80-89%
C= 70-79%
D= 60-69%
