Welcome back to school! We look forward to an exciting year in the 5

th
grade. Below you will
find information about classroom procedures and policies. Parents and students, please read this
together, then sign and return.
I promise you everyday your child will learn something. Some days theyll bring it home in their
hands. Some days theyll bring it home in their heads. Some days theyll bring it home in their hearts.

General Information
1) School starts at 9:00 a.m. Any students that arrive after the bell at 9:05 must be checked in
at the office for a tardy slip.
2) Late work will be subject to a grade reduction. ALL work needs to be completed and turned
in. Any missing work not turned in by the following Friday will receive no credit.
3) Students should not bring electronics, toys or games from home unless teacher permission is
granted. If students are found playing with these items during class, the toys will be taken
away and returned at the teachers discretion.
4) Gum and candy from home is not allowed at school. Students chewing gum or candy will be
asked to throw it away.
5) In order for students to participate in P.E. or field trips, students need to have shoes that are
appropriate. Backless, open-toed, or high-heeled footwear are not acceptable. Please wear
appropriate footwear; students may keep extra shoes for P.E in their locker.
Curriculum and grading policy
Curriculum is based on the Common Core Standards set forth by the State of Utah.
Students grades are based on their performance within this curriculum. Granite Districts grading
guidelines are as follows:
A: 90% to 100%
B: 80% to 89%
C: 70% to 70%
N: 69% and below
At any time, you may access your childs grades by checking out the online gradebook at:

Attendance
Frequent absences of students from the day-to-day classroom experience disrupt the
instructional process. The benefits of instruction, once lost, cannot be entirely regained. Your child
should be in attendance daily. Illness, medical appointments and family emergencies are legitimate
absence. It is policy to allow one day, for each day absent, to complete missed work.
Discipline Policy
In order to insure that our classroom is a place where students are safe and where students
can learn, there are a few simple rules students need to obey.
1. Respect the people, equipment, and furnishings of Woodrow Wilson Elementary.
2. Always come prepared to learn; have all appropriate materials and supplies at your
desk before class begins.
3. Follow directions first time they are given.
4. Adjust your voice level to suit the activity.
5. Observe all rules of Woodrow Wilson Elementary.
Those who follow the rules may receive verbal praise, material rewards or privileges.
Those who do not follow the rules will be subject to the following:
1. Reminder of the rule
2. Natural consequences or the loss of free time
3. Seating changed
4. Loss of an activity
5. Conference with parent
Homework
Students will have homework every night. It is encouraged for students to keep track of their
homework in their binder and planner. All classwork and math homework are due the following
day and late work must be turned in before the end of the week for any credit.
Work not completed at school each day will be make-up work and must be done at home. If
your child is struggling to keep up and has a lot of make-up work, please come in to talk to me.
It usually means that the student is not completing assignments during school time when there
is the opportunity to work.
Math homework Monday Thursday night. Choose any five problems to complete on
worksheet, but work must be shown for credit. Due the next morning.
Students must read at least 20 minutes every day (including weekends). It can be novels,
magazines, comics, or even text books. After reading, once a week you must respond to a
comprehension question on our website! Reading minutes are signed and returned monthly.
Spelling words are assigned and written on the first day of each week. Work is completed on
Spellingcity.com, students may complete work and activities at home. Test must be taken in
class at the end of the week.
Students should read at least 20 minutes every day. A summary of reading minutes signed
by a parent is due the first day of every week.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information! Parents, if you have any questions,
