Alberta MLA Ric McIver, a candidate to be leader of his party, writes to his party's president to urge him to ban free giveaways of party membership by other leadership campaigns. So far as we know, only the campaign of Jim Prentice has been covering the $10 cost of party memberships for those who will sign up to vote for Prentice.

Common sense, new thinking.
Mr. Jim McCormick, President PC Alberta #340, 999 8 Street SW Calgary, AB T2R 1J5 August 18, 2014
Dear Jim: I am writing to follow up on the issue of leadership campaigns giving out free memberships. I think this practice is just plain wrong and my bosses are telling me that they agree. I fully recognize the party has the right to make the rules on this matter for this race. However, Im disappointed those rules werent clear on this matter at the start of the race and that the party is not taking a harder stance on this issue. I believe this practice devalues the party, and I am committed to making vote buying by leadership campaigns against the rules in the future if Im elected PC leader and Premier next month. When we talk to Albertans about buying or renewing their memberships, we are also talking to them about our values and beliefs as candidates and as an organization. We are building up the party one $10 membership at a time, and just because something isnt against the rules doesnt make it right. As the Auditor General so aptly said recently, A corset of rules will never replace a backbone of principles. I aspire to the highest ideals, not the lowest common denominator. I trust our party executive feels the same way, and I look forward to having clear rules on this issue in the future, prohibiting leadership campaigns from giving away free PC Alberta memberships. I believe our party still has great value, and I hope you agree. Regards,
