#igure 2 shows a schematic sketch of the de!ice on the next page shows an amusement park
pendulum ride machine. 't consists of two gondolas supported by struts on counter(rotating
shafts at the top of a support column. )uring the ride, the gondolas are swung side to side
like pendulums, but in opposite directions to each other and gradually increasing in angular
amplitude. The high point for the passengers of the ride is when the gondolas are at the top
of the swing followed by a momentary pause. The gear train for performing the counter(
rotating action can be seen in the detail *A+ of the figure. A powerful hydraulic motor
pro!ides the repeating impulse to swing the gondolas.
The appearance of the structure is due as much to function as well as to embodiment
principles used in the design. 'dentify as many instances of the application of embodiment
design principles as possible and state the benefits from their usage.
