The transition into third grade is often a challenging one
Atatimewhenstudentscompetenceandconfidenceare
emerging,theacademicandsocialdemandsincrease
exponentially.Thecurriculummovesawayfrombasic
readinginstruction;tonowbeingexpectedtoread
independentlytolearninspecificsubjectareas, writeina
formalizedformat,developstrategiestosolvemultistep
problems,andtakestandardizedtests.Thesearealldramatic
changesinthecareerofastudent.transition a smooth as
possible, while at the same, training students to work a little
faster, check work carefully, and be responsible for their
learning, work habits, and behavior.

I am here to support you and your child through
this transition. My goal is to make it as smooth as
possible, while at the same, training students to use time
wisely, work carefully, and be responsible for their
learning, work habits, and behavior.
It is extremely important that you review the
contents of the Friday Folder each week and discuss
your childs grades and work habits together at home.
Partnering with me, and raising the bar for increased
success will eventually lead to responsible life-long
citizens.

Math will be written down daily.
I give each child a conduct grade for the day.
Students are to read 20 minutes a night and
record the time in their agendas.
***Please, look over your childs planner each night
and sign it.

* Graded papers will come home every week, so
please be sure to review your childs work with
him/her.
* After reviewing the work, please sign and
return the graded papers and conduct sheet in
the Friday Folder. All work will be kept on file in
our classroom and returned at the end of the
nine weeks.

Opportunity Time (Study Hall) offered 2 Times per week.
This is Optional for students who have Incomplete or Late
homework and class work
Incomplete or missing homework /classwork could negatively
impact effort grades in each subject.
Retake Policy - Students who score 69% or below on any TEST will be
given ONE opportunity for improvement. Students who satisfactorily
complete this retake will receive a 70% in the gradebook.
Report Cards
Sent out after each nine-week quarter
Midterm reports should be viewed on Parent Portal
Signatures on Weekly Behavior Card for verification

historical figures will be covered.
SCIENCE: A total of 7 units will be covered.
Classwork grades will come from assignments,
experiments, and projects done in school.

of every test given and will also be posted on
our class web page.

Following the Readers Workshop
Daily 5 Rotations (Read to self, Read to Someone,
Word Work, and Work on Writing, Work with the
teacher )
Focus on reading comprehension - reading to learn
using CAF & UNRAAVEL Strategies
Reading comprehension across subject areas
100 minutes of weekly reading expected in addition to
and above the regularly assigned homework.

Follow the writing process in Writers Workshop
Two Formal Writing pieces per quarter:
Opinion (Persuasive)
Informative (Research)
Narrative
Response to Literature - accomplished through reading
responses
Writing Rubric- Four Domains scored:
Ideas, Style, Organization, and Conventions. These
writing sample grades will be entered as test grades.
Students will also earn classwork grades for
grammar AKS skills that are taught.

Word Study Program
Wordly Wise and Spelling assignments and
assessments will alternate each week.
Spelling Consists of:
* Priority Words (No Excuse Words, K-2)
*Core Words or our Fry Words
*Word Families/Compound
words/Prefixes/Suffixes/Greek and Latin Roots
Students will work on spelling assignments
daily in class and will be expected to
review words at home as well.
- Math workshop Model
- Grades in math will be obtained in two
ways. Classwork grades will come from
specific math assignments that we have
reviewed together and/or that theyve
completed on their own.
-Tests will be given at the end of every
math unit.
