Welcome to Elmhurst Community Prep and 6
th
Grade English Class! I am so excited to
be here and help you with your transition to middle school so you can have a great
year! I look forward to getting to know all of you so we can do some awesome learning
in this class. I have high expectations of you and hope you have the same for me. Get
ready to jump-start the year with some hard work and in-depth learning!
What You Will Learn:
ECP uses College Boards Springboard curriculum in English. 6
th
graders begin with
English Textual Power Level 1 of Springboard. Level 1 focuses on the concept of
change. How do you, as individuals, change and grow over the year intellectually,
physically, socially, and emotionally? Level 1 also examines how change impacts
individuals, families and society. Your thinking about change deepens over the
course of the year so you are able to make connections between your life and the
lives of characters, real and fictional. At the end of the year, you will be ready for
Level 2, which focuses on the concept of choice.
By the end of the year, you will
Become more organized
Increase your reading comprehension by at least one grade level
Increase your academic vocabulary
Participate in formal academic discussions
Read two novels as a class
Read several books of your choice independently without prompting
Know how to use the drafting process to write an essay (brainstorm, outline,
write, edit, revise, and rewrite)
Write five paragraph essays: narrative, expository, and literary analysis
Create a multimedia newscast with a group that you will present to the class
Take 5 English Benchmark Tests throughout the year to show your
improvement
How You Will Be Graded:
Grades will be based on four different areas: assessments, classwork, effort &
participation, and homework. You will be able to access your up-to-date grade by
using Engrade, an online grading website. Current grades will also be printed for
you with your progress reports every 3 weeks. ECP uses an A-F grading scale.

Rules and Expectations:
As a middle school student, only you are responsible for your actions. Behavior that
distracts the learning environment will not fly. We will be referring to the P.R.E.P
matrix a lot to familiarize you with it at the beginning of the year. To help us keep
our behavior on track in the mean time, we have 5 classroom expectations that
everyone must follow. They are:
1. Follow instructions the first time they are given (R)
2. Work the entire class time (E)
3. Be prepared; Bring materials every day (P)
4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself; Be safe (R)
5. Be respectful treat others how you want to be treated (R)

What if Im absent? It is your responsibility to make up all missed work due to an
absence. Work needs to be made up immediately. A 0 will significantly affect your
grade. Come see me the first day you return to get your missed work.
Can I turn in work late? Yes, it will be accepted up to one day late and will be
penalized one grade. Work received after that one day will only receive half credit.
Classroom Procedures:
During the first two weeks of school, we will be spending a lot of time as a class
practicing classroom procedures. It is vital to master these classroom procedures in
the beginning of the year in order for class time to be used efficiently. Class
procedures that we will be practicing are: how we enter the classroom, how we
gather materials at the beginning of class, how I will get your attention, what
to do when you come into class late, how to ask questions or share in class,
how to do group work, how to ask to go the bathroom, how to end class and
put away materials, and how to switch classes.
When You Need Further Assistance:
Students are strongly encouraged to ask questions and ask for additional help. If
there are special circumstances (extended absences, family issues), please see me
early and I will make arrangements and accommodations. If you have any questions
or concerns, feel free to contact me. Thank you in advance for your support. I look
forward to meeting you and helping you succeed! Ms. Bronte
PLEASE SIGN AND RETURN THE BOTTOM PORTION BY FRIDAY 8/29 (10 points!)
