Essential Question: How can we determine the length of a line segment?

On a piece of graph paper, draw the

following:
1. Draw segment AB, where A is at (4, 0)
and B is at (2, -6)
2. Draw with endpoint L(0, 0) through
point M(2, 2)
3. Draw through points C(-2, 1) and
D(-2, -3)
4a. Plots the points P(-6, -2), Q(-5, 2) and
R(-4, 6). Are these points collinear?
4b. If the signs are reversed, are those
points collinear?
Write your answers in your warm up section.
1. If two planes intersect, what does the
intersection look like?
2. If two lines intersect, what does the
intersection look like?
3. If a line an a plane intersect, what does the
intersection look like?
4. Name another real-life example of a plane
and an angle.
5. Does plane ADQP exist in the following
picture?

Essential Question: How can we determine the length of a line segment?
On a freshwater fishing trip, you catch the fish below.
By law, you must release any fish between 15 and
19 in long. You need to measure your fish, but the
front of the ruler on the boat is worn away. Can
you keep your fish? Explain how you can find your
answer.
Lets say the head of the fish is at 4in, where is the tail of the fish?
Can you tell how long the fish is from that information? If so, what is it?
Can you keep your fish?
Every point on a line can be paired with a
real number. This makes a one-to-one
correspondence between the points on
the line and real numbers. The real
number that corresponds to a point is
called a coordinate.
Note: the distance between points A
and B has the notation:
AB
What is ST?
ST = |8 (-4)|
ST = |12|
ST = 12
Now YOU Try:
What is SU?
What is TV?
What is UV?
= 14
= 6
= 4
ST = |-4 8|
ST = |-12|
ST = 12
Sometimes determining distance isnt as
easy. We go from this
To this
Since this is on a
diagonal, we cannot just
count the number of
units. The length is not 4
units.
While we can still use a
ruler to calculate the
length, we have a
formula we can use.
On maps and other grids, you often
need to find the distance between two
points not on the same grid line.
This is used for:
Taking a car trip
Flying a plane
Targeting a rocket
Computing the distance a football is
thrown

Given the word midpoint, write one
sentence that may be considered a
good definition of the word.

Midpoint the point that divides a
segment into two equal lengths.
Midpoint Formula:

purpose of the midpoint,
begin to think about what
they mean.

Note: Do you see how the midpoint represents and actual POINT.
Your solution represents the point on the line exactly in the middle of
the two endpoints. You should be able to plot that point on the graph.

Endpoint: (-7, -2) Midpoint:(-10, 4)

Try to find the other endpoint given one of
the endpoint and the midpoint.
Solution: (-13, 10)
On an xy-coordinate plane, the position of
Minneapolis, Minnesota is given by the
coordinates (-400 miles, 600 miles) and
the position of Orlando, Florida is given
by the coordinates (500 miles, -600 miles).
Approximately how far away is
Minneapolis from Orlando?
