Students begin to:
Study the history and development of English vocabulary
Read a variety of grade-level-appropriate classic and
contemporary literature, nonfiction, poetry, and plays
Compare and contrast different types of writing as well as
perspectives on similar topics of themes
Evaluate the logic of informational texts
Analyze how literature reflects the backgrounds, attitudes, and
beliefs of the authors
Write/deliver/and conduct research reports
Use conventions of Standard English correctly
Deliver a variety of types of presentations and effectively
respond to questions and concerns from the audience

Course Expectations
Attendance is necessary to keep up with the class.
Students are expected to be in their seat when the
tardy bell rings.
Students are required to participate in class and be
respectful to their peers, themselves, and their teacher.
Students are required to maintain a data binder.
Students are required to keep up with their assigned
reading and turn in assignments on time.
Plagiarism and cheating have NO place in a community
of learners.
Each student is required to put forth their personal
best.
Materials Needed
School Year 2013/14 Student Agenda (provided by school)
2 composition notebooks (any color will do)
2 inch binder (this will be kept in class)
10 clear page protectors
Loose-leaf paper
Blue or black pens
Red or green pen for grading
Highlighter
Reliable internet connection (home connection, library,
school connection)
Project materials as needed
Mini-stapler
Printing paper (for home use)

Traveling Journal
Response Journal
Independent Book Study
2 books per quarter
Quarter = 9 weeks

Students cannot study a book they have already read.
Students can choose to do a typical book report or they
may choose from a number of portfolio activities
