This course is a continuation of math skills learned in elementary and middle school. Math 9 is designed to enhance the understanding of math principles and explain many questions, such as How do I measure a circle? What is the square root of 64? Where did x come from, and how do I solve for it? and many more that we will discuss throughout the year. This course, unlike many high school courses, runs for the full year on a daily rotation. Each student will have 3 math periods over 4 days Course Objective: Students will be provided an outline of outcomes that they can check off when completed the outcomes. The main goals of mathematics education in Alberta are to prepare students to: use mathematics confidently to solve problems communicate and reason mathematically appreciate and value mathematics make connections between mathematics and its applications commit themselves to lifelong learning become mathematically literate adults, using mathematics to contribute to society. Materials Needed: Paper (Lined and Graphing), Binder, Pencil, Geometry Set, 30cm ruler and Scientific Calculator*, Textbook: Math Power 9 *Graphing calculators are unnecessary (example: Texas Instrument 83 and 84 models) Units of Study: Students will work through the units of study. Unit 1 Square Roots and Surface Area Unit 2 Powers and Exponent Laws Unit 3 Rational Numbers Unit 4 Linear Relations Unit 5 Polynomials Unit 6 Linear Equations and Inequalities Unit 7 Similarity and Transformations Unit 8 Circle Geometry Unit 9 Probability and Statistics
These units fit into the Alberta Education Curriculum Streams in the following ways: Working with Numbers (Units 1-3) Patterns and Relations (Units 4-6) Shape and Space (Unit 1, 7/8) Statistics and Probability (Unit 9) Assessment: In Class Assignments/Projects: 20% Quizzes: 20 % Unit Exams: 30% Provincial Achievement Test/Final Exam: 30% Class Expectations: Quizzes: Quizzes are implemented in to ensure understanding has been achieved. Students will be given questions at the start of each class that will act as an informative review of the material from previous classes. At the end of the week, there will be a quiz taken in for marks. Students are expected to be ready for these quizzes as they are a review of materials learned in class. Rewrites: Rewrites for exams and/or assignment are an option. Students must meet with the teacher and have shown an appropriate amount of preparation (textbook questions, homework assignments, practice questions etc.) in order to gain approval for the rewritten assignment/exam. The better of the two marks will be awarded as the grade for the assignment. Final exams (PAT) and daily quizzes are not rewritten. If an assignment, project, quiz or exam is not completed by the end of the unit, then the student will be awarded a zero after the unit is completed. Absences: Students must identify absences for classes by email to the teacher. Pre-arranged absences, such as sporting tournaments, appointments, extra-curricular activities need to be communicated to the teacher so the students can receive materials to catch up on missed material. Unexpected absences, such as illness, family emergencies or other special circumstances can be communicated via email or phone call when possible. Clarification from a parent and/or guardian may be requested depending on the absence or if a pattern of absences occurs. Be Prepared: If students come unprepared, Ms. Nielsen will have materials available to use. Students will have to either do an exchange of something or will be asked to pay a small lending fee that will be returned if the object is returned. Students also are on a daily rotation for Math 9, so students need to be aware of when their classes are to ensure appropriate attendance. P.A.R.T.Y. Participation and be Prepared Attention, Assistance and Appreciation Respect and Responsibility Teamwork and Try-It Your Effort and Enthusiasm Before Class Be prepared; Bring Materials to class (Minimum: Pencil, paper for notes, calculator, textbook). If going to be away for special circumstances (appointments, athletics, school events etc), please email the teacher ahead of time. When Arriving to Class Agenda for class will be on the Right hand side of the board (Look there to see what you will be doing) Have materials ready and complete tasks on board before class begins. Cell Phones, Tablets, I-pods/mp3 players are to be off and left in the lockers or placed in the appropriate cell phone storage area in class. When in Class Be respectful of property, peers and teacher Students will use the washroom when appropriate, and will not interrupt class times. If there is an emergency requiring phone communication, please contact the school, Ask your classmates for help, and remember the teacher is there to help you out as well. Raise hand for help or in response to questions During class time (as well as on field trips) students will be expected to work on assignments, projects, reading and related tasks. If arriving late, please do not interrupt class, sit down and wait until appropriate time to ask for further information. Notify Ms. Nielsen when possible if arriving late to class. All tests, quizzes, feedback forms, labs and assignments for Ms. Nielsen will be placed in the drop boxes Students must wait for dismissal to know when to clean up belongings. Students will have a folder where assignments will be returned if student is not present. After Class Students are expected to review materials from each class for 20 minutes to maintain success in class.
