TCUSD Acceptable Technology Use Policy


In order to support its educational goals, Temple City Unified School istrict (TCUS) is pleased to
offer the staff access to the district!s net"or# in order to share resources and to access the Internet$
Students and staff "ill %e a%le to e&plore thousands of li%raries, data%ases and "e% sites and e&change
messages "ith Internet users throughout the "orld$ Some material accessed on the Internet is
inaccurate or inappropriate for classroom and administrati'e use$ (o"e'er, TCUS %elie'es the
educational %enefits of the Internet far out"eigh the potential ris#s$
The district has ta#en steps to adhere to the Children!s Internet )rotection *ct (CI)*) including use of
the +ightspeed filter to ensure that o%,ectiona%le materials are not easily a'aila%le$ ue to the "ide
'ariety of %oth appropriate and inappropriate information a'aila%le on the Internet, all staff mem%ers
are re-uired to a%ide %y the TCUS *ccepta%le Technology Use )olicy including re'ie"ing the
accepta%le use of the net"or#, Internet and email and signing %oth sides of the sheet and returning
them to their site administrator$
TCUSD User Information and Responsibilities
TCUS!s computer and communication systems must %e used for educational or istrict ,o%
related purposes$ (+imited personal use is only permitted if it does not result in additional cost
to the istrict and does not impact employee ,o% performance$)
Users "ill %e held responsi%le for all acti'ity that ta#es place under their user accounts$
TCUS reser'es the right to e&amine all data stored on, or transmitted, %y the istrict!s
net"or#$ Users should not e&pect files stored on the istrict!s net"or# to %e pri'ate$
Users must o%ey copyright la"s and other intellectual property rights$ Unauthori.ed
installation, use or distri%ution of copyrighted soft"are or material is prohi%ited (see TCUS
/oard )olicy 0101$2)$
Users should select their pass"ord carefully to a'oid %eing easily accessed or forgotten3 in
addition this pass"ord should not %e disclosed to anyone$
Users may not participate in online chats other than for educational and professional purposes$
Users must not disclose or pu%lish student information on the "e% (see /oard policy for
guidelines)$
Users are discouraged from disclosing personal information on the "e%$
Users must not do anything that "ill damage technology e-uipment or systems$
Users must not do anything that "ill disrupt the istrict!s net"or# or any other net"or#$
Users are responsi%le for appropriate %eha'ior on school computer net"or#s ,ust as they are in
school classrooms$

Expectations for Electronic Commnications !idelines
The district recogni.es that today!s students are deeply engaged in electronic forms of communication
for their daily interactions "ith friends, family and their larger social net"or#s$ *s educators, "e too
ha'e turned to email, "e%sites, %logs, te&t messaging, and use of social media "e%sites such as T"itter,
8ace%oo#, and others to communicate "ith similar groups$ ;hereas these forms of communications
are dynamic, mo%ile, and -uic#ly reach their audience through technologies that ha'e %ecome an
integral part of our online li'es, they may, in many circumstances, not meet the pu%lic and professional
standards for communicating "ith students that "e set for oursel'es here in TCUS$
The e&pectations outlined in this document are designed for the purpose of<

communicating "ith students3 and
=$ :aising a"areness of the positi'e and negati'e outcomes that may result in using these
tools "ith students$
The follo"ing is a set of e&pectations that all mem%ers of the TCUS professional community are
e&pected to adhere to "hen communicating "ith students electronically$
oes the communication pass the T*) Test>
Electronic communication "ith students should al"ays %e Transparent, *ccessi%le and )rofessional as
defined %elo"<
1$ The communication is transparent$ ? *++ electronic communication %et"een staff and
students should %e transparent$ *s a pu%lic school district, "e are e&pected to maintain
openness, 'isi%ility and accounta%ility "ith regards to all communications$
1$ The communication is accessi%le$ @ *++ electronic communication %et"een staff and
students should %e considered a matter of record, part of the istrict archi'es, andAor may
%e accessi%le %y others$
=$ The communication is professional$ ? *++ electronic communication from staff to student
should %e "ritten as a professional representing TCUS$ This includes "ord choices, tone,
grammar and su%,ect matter that model the standards and integrity of a TCUS
professional$ *l"ays choose "ords that are courteous, conscientious, and generally
%usinessli#e in manner$
If your communication meets all three of the criteria a%o'e, then it is 'ery li#ely that the methods of
communicating "ith students that you are choosing are 'ery appropriate3 moreo'er, encouraged$

Ed+ine and School ;e%sites @ ;ith the implementation of this ne" grade %oo#A"e%site management system,
teachers "ill %e a%le to communicate directly "ith students and parents regarding information related to real@
time grades, comments, assignments, and much more right from their grade %oo#s$
School ;e%sites @ The use of these istrict@pro'ided tools is strongly encouraged$ Their accessi%ility is
u%i-uitous and their content is highly transparent$ Unli#e 8ace%oo#, our TCUS communication tools meet all
three of the T*) criteria detailed a%o'e$
TCUS Email @ Use of istrict email is al"ays a 'ery appropriate "ay to communicate directly "ith students
and parents$ istrict email pro'ides the staff mem%er "ith a record of the communication$ 8or this reason, only
the district@pro'ided email system (your BTCUS$net address) should %e used$
#ess Acceptable Commnications "ethods
Te&t 6essaging @ 4early e'ery student has a cell phone today and use of te&t messaging is rising sharply$ This
form of communication is typically %et"een indi'iduals and highly personal$ Since te&ting is such a -uic# and
con'enient "ay of communication, a simple message may lead to an e&tended te&ting con'ersation that can get
Coff topic$D That said, staff mem%ers should %e a"are that te&t messaging %et"een a staff mem%er and an
indi'idual student can easily %e misinterpreted %y a parent$ If a teacherAcoachAsponsor plans to use te&ting for
immediate and urgent contact "ith studentsAteam mem%ers, they must %e transparent a%out such use$ (eAshe
must ma#e parents a"are at the %eginning of the school year or season that heAshe may use te&ting$
Unacceptable Commnications "ethods
4on@istrict Email *ccounts ? TCUS employees should ne'er use personal email accounts to communicate
"ith students a%out school matters$ Coaches not employed %y TCUS during the school day must also follo"
this e&pectation$
9nline Eames and :elated *cti'ities ? ;hile many people en,oy a 'ariety of gaming systems (;ii, F%o&, etc$)
and recreational "e%sites that allo" them to compete "ith others through the Internet, this is not an accepta%le
acti'ity for staff mem%ers to engage in "ith students$

Important Reminders for Employees &ho se $aceboo%' T&itter' or other Social "edia Sites for Personal
Prposes
Staff mem%ers "ho are presently using 8ace%oo# to communicate "ith friends, family and their personal
net"or#s, should ensure that their pri'acy settings are set to C9nly 8riends$D If the C8riends of 8riendsD or
C4et"or#s and 8riendsD settings are used, staff mem%ers open their content to a much larger group of people,
including students and parents$ Staff mem%ers should ne'er CfriendD students "ho are currently enrolled in
TCUS, nor should you accept their Cfriend re-uests$D The "all %et"een the role of a pu%lic educator and
personal friendships "ith students should al"ays %e 'isi%le and strongly communicated$
*ny content staff mem%ers pu%lish, pictures they post, or dialogue they maintain, "hether in 8ace%oo#, T"itter,
a %log, a discussion thread or other "e%site, should ne'er compromise the professionalism, integrity and ethics
in their role as a TCUS professional$ * good -uestion that staff mem%ers should as# themsel'es %efore posting
or emailing a message is, C;ould I mind if that information appeared on the front page of the local ne"spaper>D
If the ans"er is Cyes,D then do not post it$ Contrary to "hat some people thin#, email and social net"or#ing sites
are 'ery pu%lic places$
Staff mem%ers should contact their site principal, administrator or the irector of Technology "ith any

TCUSD Email Use Policy
Staff members of the TCUSD have to access a District email account. The following guidelines
are to be followed at all times:
Email is used for educational or istrict ,o% related purposes$ (+imited personal use is
only permitted if it does not result in additional cost to the istrict and does not impact
employee ,o% performance$)
Email can %e used to disseminate employee information and promote good@"ill among
employees$
Use distri%ution lists only "ithin your site or follo" the istrict process "hen using
distri%ution lists %eyond your immediate place of "or#$
Users are e&pected to read and reply to email daily and delete un"anted messages$
Email is not considered pri'ate$
Email more than t"o "ee#s old may %e purged from the email ser'er at the end of the
semester "ithout notice$
Email should %e sent to a specific target audience and not distri%uted randomly$
User accounts inacti'e for three or more months (i$e$ no logins or read emails) "ill %e
deleted as they pose a security ris# and tie up 'alua%le system resources$
istrict Email is not to %e used to sell personal items or to ma#e a personal profit in any
"ay$
Users are prohi%ited from sending commercial andAor offensi'e email$
Users are prohi%ited from using any form of electronic media (e&$ Email or "e% pages)
to harass intimidate or other"ise annoy another personAgroup$
Use of the TCUS net"or# to post, send, or retrie'e pornographic material,
inappropriate te&t or graphic files, or files dangerous to the integrity of the net"or# is
prohi%ited$
Users are re-uested to report any "ea#nesses "ith the istrict!s net"or#, computer
security system, or to report incidents of possi%le misuse, or 'iolation of this agreement
to the Tech Support staff$
