WellSectionsinPetrel2011
SignificantchangesweremadeinPetrelregardinghowtobuildWellSectionsbetweenReleases2009and2010.
MorechangeshavebeenmadeinthisareainPetrel2011.Mostofthenewchangesweretoenhancetheuseofthe
template.ThisTIPS&TRICKSshows:
1) howtocreatebasic(andnotsobasic)WellSectionsinPetrel2011,
2) wheretheelementsarenowlocated,and
3) theuseoftemplatesinthenewversion.
OneofthebiggestchangesinPetrel2011istheenhanceduseoftemplates.Inordertoshowthesechanges,wewill
buildmultipleWellSectionsandadditemstothemby:
Addingwells
Changingtheorderofthewells
Addinglogs
Changingtheorderofthelogsandtracksinthesection
Colorfillingbetweenthelogandatrackboundary
Placingmultiplelogsinonetrack
Colorfillingbetweenthelogsinthetrack
AddingWellTops
Colorfillingbetweenthetopsinbetweenthewells
Addingseismic,3Dmodelhorizonsandpropertiesinbetweenthewells

CreatingaWellSection
1. Tocreateawellsection,clickonWindowNewwellsectionwindow

2. YouwillthenseeapaneltoSelectnewwellsectiontemplate.Youcancreateanewtemplateorusea
previouslyexistingtemplate.Ifyouhavecreatedoneormoretemplatesbefore,theyareavailableto
chooseagainorPetrelprovidessomepredefineddefaulttemplates.TemplatesusedinPetrel2009are
convertedandsaved,adoptingthenameofthewellsection,thensequencing1,2,3,etc.
3. ThetemplatesmayalsobefoundnearthebottomoftheTemplatestabinthefolderWellsectiontemplates.
Fornow,letschoosetocreateanewtemplateandusethedefaultname(inthiscase;Wellsection
template2).
4. ClickOKandthenewemptyWellSectionappearsinthegraphicsareaandalsoatthebottomofthe
Windowstab.
Itisnowtimetoaddwellstothesection.

AddwellstoaWellSection
TherearethreemethodsforaddingwellstoaWellSection:
ClickingonthewellsintheWellsfolder.
Clickingonthewellsina3Dwindow.
AddingwellsintheWellSectionSettingsDefinitiondialogusingthehorizontalbluearrow.Highlight
oneormorewells,clickthehorizontalbluearrow,andtheyareaddedtothebottomofthewelllistforthe
section.
Fornow,letsclickonthewellsintheWellsfolder.Wewilllookatanothermethodlater.
1. ExpandtheWellsfolder(Inputpane)untilyoucanseethewells
2. Inthisexample,IclickedonthewellsC1,C2,C3andC7inthatorder.Thewellsappearinthatorderinthe
Wellsection.Also,thewellsappearintheSettingsdialogfortheWellsectionundertheWindowspane.
BringuptheSettingsandgototheDefinitiontabandyouwillseethewells.(Petrel2009andprevious
versionshadthewellslistedundertheWellSectionpictureintheWindowstab.)

3. Tobebetterabletoseewherethewellslierelativetoeachother,opena3DwindowanddisplaytheWells
alongwiththeWellsectionfencefromtheWellsectionintheWindowstab.InachangefromPetrel2010,
theWellsectionfenceisstoredintheInputpaneunderafoldernamedCrosssections.Ifthisfolderdidnt
alreadyexist,itiscreatedandplacedatthebottomoftheInputpane.Expandthisfolderandplacea
checkmarkintheboxinfrontofthefence.
4. IcanseefromtheWellsectionfencethatabetterorderforthewellswouldbeC7C1C2C3.Tochangethe
order,returntotheWellSectionSettingsDefinitiontab,andhighlighttheC7well.Usethe
Uparrow onthelefttomoveittothetopofthelist.
5. AfterhittingApplyorOK,thefencenowlooksmorelikeIwantittolook.

andthesectionnowappearswiththechosenwellsandthedepthtracks.
NotethatthedepthtracksareinSSTVD,startatdifferentdepthsandhavedifferentscales.Thesecanalso
bechangedintheWellSectionwindowsSettingsDefinitiontab.
6. ClickontheSetabsolutescalebuttonandchangethescaletoaconstantvalue(like2200).

7. Next,changetheWellpositionsynchronizationtoFlattenondepthandpick2000SSTVD.
8. ClickOK.Sometimes,toseetheflattening,youmusttrytoscrollonewellandtheotherswillclickinto
place.Thesectionnowlookslike:

AddlogstoaWellSection
1. Addinglogstoawellsectionisasimpleprocedure.SimplyexpandtheWellsGlobalwelllogsfolderand
clickinfrontofalogtoadd.LetsaddtheGamma,PorosityandNetNonnetlogs.Onewellinthesection:

Wehavenowaddedtothetemplatealso.TherearemultiplewaystoopenthetemplateSettings:

UndertheWellSectionSettingsDefinitiontab,clickontheShowwellsectiontemplatesettings
button
UndertheTemplatespane,doubleclickonthetemplatenameorrightclickandchooseSettings
Bringupthetemplateusingoneoftheabovemethods(theremightalsobeothers).IfPetrelasksyoutoUpdatethe
currenttemplate,clickOK.UndertheWellsectiontemplatesettingstab,youcannowseethelogtemplates.These
showthetracksinthewellsectioninorder.TheIndextrackisthedepthtrack.TheLithologiestrackisthe
NetNonnettrack.

2. ChangethetrackordertohavethedepthtrackbetweenthePorosityandNetNonnettracks.Dothisby
clickingonIndextrack(Thisshowsthedepthstyle(SSTVD,TVD,TVT,etc.)dependingonwhatthesectionis
in)andusingthedownarrow tothelefttoplaceitinthecorrectposition.
3. ClickingApplyorOKchangesthewellsection.

Colorfillthelogs
Now,letscolorfillbetweenthelogsandthetrackedge.
1. ClickontheCreate/editcurvefill iconontheFunctionbar
2. Clickinalogtrackonthesideofthelogcurveyouwantfilledwithcolor.
Andthetrackisfilledwithcolor.Thecolorcomesfromthetemplatesettingsforthattypeoflog.
3. Also,filltheotherlog.Notethatallthewellsinthesectionhavetheirlogsfilled.
4. Ifyoudontwantthecolortogototheedgeofthetrack,putthecursoratthepointinthecolorfillwhere
youwantthecolortostopandclickagain.

CreatinganotherWellSection
Now,wewillcreateasecondWellsection
1. CreateanotherwellsectionbyclickingonWindowNewwellsectionwindow
2. Again,youwillseeapaneltoSelectnewwellsectiontemplate.Oncemore,letscreateanewtemplate
calledinthiscase:Wellsectiontemplate3.
IfyoucheckShowsettings,thetemplatesSettingsdialogopenswhenyouclickOK.
3. ClickOKandthenewemptyWellSectionappearsinthegraphicsareaandalsoatthebottomofthe
Windowstab.AnewWellSectionfenceappearsundertheCrosssectionsfolderintheInputpane.

Wewilladdwellstothissectiongraphically.
4. Createanew3Dwindoworclearallvisualizationsoutofanexisting3Dwindow.
5. DisplaytheWellsinthe3Dwindow
6. UseTileHorizontaltobeabletoseeboththe3DwindowandtheWellSectionatthesametime.(Ifother
windowsarealsoactive,deactivatethemsoonlythe3DwindowandtheWellSectionareactive.Then
pressTileHorizontalagain).
7. ActivatetheprocessStratigraphyWellcorrelation.
ThisaddsanicontotheFunctionbar.PresstheAddwelltowellsection icon

8. Withthe3Dwindowactive,clickonthewellsintheorderyouwantthemaddedtothesection.(Youmust
clickonthewellpathoftheobject.Selectioncanbedifficultifthewellpathsareverythinorthereare
manywells.Youmight
havetomakethePipe
widthlargerunderWells
SettingsStylePathin
ordertobeableto
accuratelypickthewells).
Asyoupickthewells,you
shouldseethemappearin
theWellsectionandalso
havetheWellsectionfence
appearinthe3Dwindow.
(Onceagain,ifthewellsare
inthewrongorderonthe
section,gototheWell
SectionSettings
Definitiontabandchange
theorder.Ifyouclickona
wellyoudontreallywant
inthesection,deleteit
fromthesectioninthe
sameplace.)
9. MaketheWellsectioncovertheentiregraphicsarea(inotherwords,getridofthe3Dwindow;weare
finishedwithit).

AddlogstothenewWellSection
1. ExpandtheWellsGlobalwelllogsfolderandclickinfrontofalogtoadd.Again,letsaddtheGamma
andPorositylogs.Onewellinthesection:

Wewanttoputthelogsinthesametrackinthissection.
2. Openthetemplateusingoneofthemethodsdescribedearlierandupdatethecurrenttemplate.
3. HighlightthenameofthePorositylog(notthePorositytrack).UsetheUpArrow icontomovethe
logintotheGammatrack.

4. ClickApplyorOKtochangetheWellSection.Youmightwanttodeletetheemptytrack(theoldPorosity
track).

ColorFillBetweentheLogs
1. HighlightthecombinedGamma/PorositytrackinthetemplateWellsectiontemplate3andgototheCurve
fillingtabontherightsideofthetemplate.
2. ClickontheAddnewcurvefilling icontoaddanobject.
3. MaketheFilledgefromCurvetoCurve.MakethetopcurveGammaandthebottomcurvePorosity.
4. ChooseaFillstyle(positive)PatternandFillstyle(positive)Fillcolorthatyouwantforthetypeofdata
5. BesuretheBoxinfrontofColorfillischeckedinordertoseewhatyouhavedone
6. RepeatchoosingapatternandcolorforFillstyle(negative).PressOK
7. Closethetemplate

Therearetwomethodsforaddingtoppickstothesection.Either
1. PutacheckmarkintheboxinfrontoftheWellTopsfile(likeinpreviousversions),or
2. Bringupthetemplateusinganyofthemethods,rightclickonBoreholemarkersandchooseWellTops.

TurnonandoffintheStratigraphyfolderanyyoudonotwantonthesectionoranyyouwantonthesectionthat
arenotdisplayedasyoulike.

AddGraphicsbetweentheWells
Wemayalsoaddgraphicsbetweenthewells.InPetrel2010,youcouldonlycolorfillthezonesbetweenwells.
InPetrel2011,otheroptionshavebeenadded.
1. Bringupthetemplateonthe2ndwellsection(theonewithcolorfillbetweenwells).
2. HighlighttheWelltops(nottheBoreholemarkersfolder)andgototheSymbolsandlabelstabontheright
side.
3. PutacheckintheboxforShowcolorfillatzonelevelandclickApplyorOK.Ifthelevelissetto(max),the
highestlevelzonewillbefilled.Ifitissetto1,onlylevel1zoneswillbefilled,etc.Belowisapicturewith
thelevelsetto(max).

3. ChooseWellsectiontemplate2.TheWellSectionchangestotheothertemplate,butusingthewellsfrom

WehavegeneratedtwosectionswithtemplatesandexperimentedwithPetrelsuppliedtemplates.Thisisjusta
sampleofwhatcanbedoneinWellSectionsinPetrel2011.Thegoalherewastoshowsomeofthenewthingsthat
canbedonewithtemplates.Thesechangesmaketemplatesapowerfultoolthatiseasytouse(onceyouhave
learnedhow).TheyaresavedtothePetrelprojectjustlikeallotherdataissaved.Templatescanbemovedfrom
oneprojecttoanotherusingFileReferenceprojecttoolwhichmakesthemeasytotransferfromoneteam
membertoanotherorfromafinishedprojecttoanewone.
