(Highlight or Circle the letter corresponding to the Activity)

ACTIVITY TOPIC: Serve on a College-wide Planning Committee

PARTICIPANTS NAME: Dana L. Sawyer
1. What were the significant learning points for you in this activity?
I served on the Resource Scheduler Committee the first year, led by Dr. Rick Kralevich.
The project entailed assessing, identifying and choosing a new system that would allow
for consistency across the credit and non-credit side in how facilities were used. There
are currently two systems managing facilities - Banner on the credit side and Xenegrade
on the non-credit side. There is some manual work to ensuring consistency, which is time
consuming and not an effective use of staff time. There is no one place to request and
reserve rooms, which can be confusing. The goal of the Committee was to design,
develop and deliver one College-wide system that can be accessed, managed and
maintained centrally. The Committee reviewed use requirements with all users and made
a determination of what elements were important to each. Then research was done to
find what enterprise systems were available to meet our needs. Three vendors presented
their products to the Committee, and a decision is being made about which to choose,
taking into account all of the established parameters.

2. Which leadership characteristic(s) was/were enhanced and/or learned through this

activity? Explain.
Rick was a great leader, as he brought all of the stakeholders together to discuss our
needs and desires, without placing limits on the discussion. Committee members were
then given the ability to research Best Practices in the field, what systems were already
out there doing good work and had a good reputation and were involved in the decisionmaking process of choosing a new vendor. There was buy-in early on and no one can
now complain about the results as we all had a hand in the process. This is a good medel
of leadership to follow, as it supports staff while empowering them to make decisions that
impact their daily working lives.
