ACTIVITY TOPIC: Teach 3-credit Class
PARTICIPANTS NAME: Dana L. Sawyer 1. What were the significant learning points for you in this activity? During the summer of 2014, I taught HMS 343 - Directed Practice I. I had a total of seven Human Services students in the class who were involved in internships. Each week we discussed a topic specific to working in the community (i.e. documentation procedures, ethics, communication strategies, career planning etc.) and I also conducted site visits for each student to ensure that the placement was going well. I had not been in the classroom since 2000, when I taught Social Policy and Planning at the Wilmington Campus, so I had to take a crash course in Blackboard from CCIT. That was helpful to preparing for the class. The students were engaging and interested, and the internship sites varied. I was familiar with each one of them, and knew people at all of the internship sites which help with any issues that arose. The students were all great to work with and appeared to enjoy the class.
2. Which leadership characteristic(s) was/were enhanced and/or learned through this
activity? Explain. Being back in the classroom was a great experience. I have taught several non-credit classes over the years that were shorter in duration, so helping students reach an Associates Degree again was fulfilling. I learned more about myself while in the classroom again, especially about how important it is to listen. The students were thoughtful and eager for guidance - much like staff. They absorbed all of the material, asked good questions, learned from one another and sought guidance from me about their future career goals. We all benefitted from the experience and plan to stay connected so that I can support them as they move forward with their career.
