NOW...One device, the

The journey begins...
Mobile devices have become instructional tools
in our elementary classrooms. We are on a

TECHNOLOGY AS A TOOL
Goals:
Enhance learning;
Individualize instruction;
Promote collaboration, increasing student engagement;
Strengthen creativity, and communication / collaboration
skills...necessary for future success!
Digital Citizenship: The norms of appropriate, responsible
use of technology.
Digital citizenship
* guides students, teachers, parents and administrators regarding
appropriate use of technology.
* prepares users for a society full of technology.
How?
Common Sense Media has developed a K-12 Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum. Specific lessons
have been developed for each grade level and will be taught during the school year.
Most importantly, digital citizenship is embedded in the daily work of the classroom and is integrated
into our Social Emotional Learning standards. A partnership between home and school is critical.
Powerful Uses of Technology
iPad usage is purposefully planned and used as appropriate within the
classroom under the supervision of the teacher.
Technology can be used to:
Build foundational knowledge
Apply knowledge: a focus on creation and collaboration;
contextualized learning and making learning engaging /
meaningful
Personalizing learning: differentiated learning opportunities
Assess learning: capturing what students know and can do
Enhance home/school/global connections
Teaching Above the Line

tell me.
I will hold the iPad with two clean hands.
I will ask 3 friends for support before an adult.
I will keep food, liquids, and anything sticky away from the iPad.
I will charge my iPad every night. I will work at a charging station if my
battery is red.
Home Expectations:
When your child brings home a district iPad, please commit to the following

iPad time at home will be purposeful and reflect extensions of learning
from school, as assigned by the teacher.
iPad time is an opportunity for students to share what they are learning
with family members.

the iPad stays in its case in a safe place at all times.
students and families will promptly report to the teacher any problems or
concerns that arise with their district device.
Digital Portfolios
Students will create their own digital portfolio during the
2014-2015 school year.
Benefits to the digital portfolio:
enduring and can be added to over time.
incorporates multi-media elements.
incorporates reflection over time, allowing students and teachers to further
develop metacognition. This reflection can be as important as the final
product.
learning how I learn
thinking about how I think
can be viewed at anytime throughout the school year.
Library eBooks
If your child has a Vernon Area library card, he or
she will utilize it at school, in order to gain access to
the vast array of eBooks available from the Vernon
Area Library. This will allow your child to have more
books at his or her fingertips than ever before! Your
childs teacher will gather this information from you
in the classroom.
