Thing 18: Dig the Data

Learning about different ways and techniques to analyze data by using spreadsheets and
graphs.

Spreadsheets in Education
Used for data collection(s), lists, calculations, sorting, explore what-if questions,
problem-solving, and graphics that show trends and analysis.

Working with Spreadsheets
Examples of spreadsheet applications: Microsoft Office Excel, Google Spreadsheets,
Open Office Spreadsheets, and Microsoft Works spreadsheets

Data Collection
Creating an online poll/survey that provides your data in a spreadsheet format.

Reflection/Assignment
#1.

Using data on the ACT readiness for the schools within Shiawassee County, I found the
total number of students who met or exceeded the ACT benchmark, the number of students
who did not meet the ACT benchmark, the total number of students that took the ACT. Then I
went through and found the percent of students who met the ACT benchmark and the percent
of students did not meet that benchmark score.

When making the visual graph of the data, I used the locations and the data for those
who met/exceeded and those who did not meet the ACT benchmark. When looking at just the
numbers, it doesn't look like the school district I took my test in is that far off. Well, when you
put it in a graph, it shows how much better the ACT scores are throughout the state, than in
one little county. It is hard to tell by the bar graph that more students did meet or exceed the
benchmark score, than those students who did not meet it.

#2.

This image is showing after I added titles and sorted the list in alphabetical order (A-Z). I
also summed up the total points that were earned from the 5 results and did the same with the
total points possible from the test.

The image above shows what the data would look like if you did a bar graph that
included the percentages that were scored on the test when it was taken. I wanted to add in
the total number of points earned and the points earned, but it got too confusing having
different data that doesn't go with the percentages scored.

#3. There are many ways that one can use speadsheets for in the classroom. One way may be
when you are trying to show data on the last test that was taken. You wouldn't be able to
include names, but if your students had some sort of an ID that they can be known as.
Speadsheets can also be used for organizing test scores, grades and assignment grades. Then all
the information for those things would be kept in one place and you wouldn't have to have
different folders for each, you can have different tabs at the bottom of the screen. You can also
keep attendence on a spreadsheet then you can do it by the week, month, or semester. As for
the online polling/survey's, those would be helpful onlne because then you can send an email
to the parents with the link and have their input as long with the kids' in the classroom.
