ASEAN identity is the overall cultural values of its member countries (collective

personality, norms, values, beliefs, spirits), which is seen as what is in the interests of ASEAN
(as the basis of regional interests), bringing together all forms of difference (consolidate unity in
diversity at all levels, create sense of belonging), and has the ability to encourage, foster,
directing the movements and steps of ASEAN (to mainstream and promote greater awareness
and common values). However, ASEAN identity is still an entity that is not conclusive as the
concept, it illustrates that the concept of identity for ASEAN admittedly still in "pre-formation", (in
search of identity, identity in the making)
For me The formulation of an ASEAN identity like this is intended to achieve strategic
objectives, especially the culture, a sense of belonging, consolidate unity in diversity and
enhance deeper mutual understanding among ASEAN member States about their culture,
history, religion, and civilization. When the issue of cultural values is addressed properly, then
clearly what is meant by ASEAN identity. it is "Unity in diversity" itself as well, as the concept of
value, The first one (unity) describes the issue of what cultural factors that are inherent become
a unifying force of each ASEAN member. And second (diversity) describes the issue of what
cultural factors that distinguish distinctive (but enriching, empowering) ASEAN community.
If we complacent about that, perhaps later on ASEAN identity narrative will be written not
by "the people of Southeast Asia" itself but by Global forces. Moreover, without a conception of
identity able to lead, it is feared ASEAN free market will become a narrative drama which lost
direction, without a clear scenario, and with the themes are pragmatic, secular, and
opportunistic.
