a highly regarded contemporary and jazz choreographer
Artistic Director of Hysterica Dance Company; based in Los
Angeles
a pop-influenced, theatrically driven company focused on
exploring collaborations with other artists; filmmakers, fashion
designers, composers, and musicians.
Hysterica was founded in 1997
has performed at RedCat, LACMA, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and
Highways.
has done work for the LA Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the LA
Philharmonic
she has coached and choreographed for Julianne Hough, Margaret Cho,
Vanessa Williams, Vittorio Grigolo, Lily Tomlin, Anna Natrebko, and
Rolando Villazon.
began dancing at 16 years old because she saw the Joffrey Ballet perform
in her hometown Ohio and immediately fell in love with dance.
she likes to take on challenges ( operas, concerts, tv, videos, etc.) because
it fuels her creativity, as well as her curiosity.

1) How and when did you begin dancing? I didn't start dancing until I was 16. I lived
in a small town and there was no teacher until then. I started on the high
school drill team.

2) Where did you begin training in dance and who were some of your instructors? My
first teacher was in that small studio, Helen Hoschinski. when my family
moved to Texas I auditioned for and got into the performing arts high school in
Houston.

3) How did you begin Hysterica Dance Company? I asked a group of dancers that I
liked if they wanted to dance for me, I was doing a little choreography in plays
around LA, but wanted to do concert dance. I also wanted to take some
choreography to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and needed an official group to
apply.

4) Lastly, how did you get where you are today and what was the process like? The
process has been crazy. L ots of ups and downs and LOTS of hard work...but
worth every moment of it. I still love choreographing. I made my own work for
10 years with Hysterica...I think that is the most important thing-to practice
choreographing as much as possible. I also think always being professional and
hard working goes along way in having people ask you to work for them again
and building a career.

Kitty loves how the dance and music fit together. She loves this
because she believes that it helps unravel mysteries from the music.
her greatest challenge in having a dance company in LA is that
there isnt a lot of funding for dance here.
her greatest influences are Isadora Duncan and Martha
Graham because of their maverick spirit and originality.
love getting new choreographic ideas from anything, such as
fashion, musicians, films, etc.
she looks for PROFESSIONALISM, PASSION, DRAMA, &
CLARITY when she is casting dancers for a project
Hysterica does a lot of theatre work.
she loves working with dancers who are as passionate as she is.
her uniqueness is that she loves working with operas and loves to
choreograph with them.

Kittys use of pointe work mixed with contemporary is just simply
amazing to me. I love that she allows her dancers to dance so freely and
lets them be themselves, yet still performing and hitting all of the right
moves. On the other hand, I love that she also has pieces where her
dancers cant move as freely, and have to move smoothly and slowly,
with precision. Personally, her pointe pieces are my favorite because its
not just ballet, but its beautifully mixed with contemporary and it all
flows together. You can also unravel stories from each of her pieces and
youll always get a different story from each piece. The fact that she took
the time to write back and reply to my questions makes me like her even
more an shows me that she really does pay attention to her people and
her fans!
