Pick up your new packet for Unit 2 The
Periodic Table
Take out your Unit 2 Vocabulary from
last class
Answer the following questions in your
notebook:
1. What is an element to you?
2. What is a compound to you?
3. What is a mixture to you?

Topic of the Day: 2.1 Elements
Compounds and Mixtures
Vocabulary: Matter, The Periodic Table,
Elements, Compounds, Mixtures,
Metal, Nonmetal, Metalloid
Date: 9/10 (A) or 9/11 (B)
Unit 2: The Periodic Table Schedule
The atom is the smallest building block of matter. Unit 2
is about (1) how models of the atom have changed over
time and (2) how atom reactivity and size change in
different environments.

OBJECTIVES
I can distinguish between elements, compounds
and mixtures
I can distinguish between heterogeneous and
homogenous mixtures
I can identify the different parts of a formula

Topic of the Day: 2.1 Elements, Compounds, and
Mixtures
Topic of the Day:
2.1 Elements, Compounds, and
Mixtures
Essential Question: How can I
determine the differences between
elements, compounds and mixtures?
A. How can we classify the different types
of matter?
How can we classify the different types of
matter?
Pure Substance
Element: Compound:
B. What makes up matter?
1. Pure Substances
a. Elements = Cannot be broken down in to simpler
substances and contains ONE capital letter
Ex: Cl
2
or Na
Smallest unit = atom
b. Compounds = Composed of TWO or more
elements BONDED together and contains TWO or
more capital letters
Ex: NaCl, H
2
SO
4

Smallest unit = molecule
Example = Why is Cl
2
an element?
Example = Why is Cl
2
an element?
1. 1 capital letter
2. 1 substance (chlorine)
B. What makes up matter?
2. Mixtures are combinations of two or more
substances in which each substance retains its
own chemical identity
a. Homogeneous mixture = uniform composition
Appears to be one substance
Ex: Soda, air, salt water
b. Heterogeneous mixture = varies in composition
Ex: Wood, rocks, salad, spaghetti and meatballs, soil
Quick Practice (2 mins.)
For each of the following jot down the number
and indicate whether it is an element (E),
compound (C), homogeneous mixture (HOM) or
heterogeneous mixture (HEM)
1. HCN
2. Kool-aid
3. Gold ring (symbol = Au)
4. Air
5. Chicken Noodle Soup
COMPOUND
HOMOGENOUS MIXTURE
ELEMENT
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE
HETETROGENEOUS MIXTURE
What is the Periodic Table of
Elements?
1. List of each element, which has its own name
and symbol (just like your name and initials)
a. Symbols = 3 letters or less (most 1 or 2 letters)
b. Only 1
st
letter is CAPITALIZED
What is the difference between
period vs. group?
1. Group = columns, #1-18
2. Period = row, #1-7

IMPORTANT GROUPS
Alkali Metals
Alkaline Earth
Metals
Halogens
Noble Gases
C. How can we experimentally determine
the type of matter?
1. Physical Change: A type of separation that
does NOT break bonds
a. Separates mixtures
b. Ex = Distillation, filtration
2. Chemical Change: A type of separation that
DOES break bonds between elements
a. Separates pure substances
b. Ex = Electrolysis
Physical Separation Chemical Separation
Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances!!!
D. What is a chemical formula and what
does it tell us?
1. Letters = Elements in compound
a. H
2
SO
4
= made up of H (hydrogen), S (sulfur) and O
(oxygen)
b. Each capital letter is a different element
2. Number = # of atoms of each element in a
compound
a. The subscript (little number) tells you how many
atoms there are of the element before it
b. If there is no subscript- it is assumed there is ONE
c. Ex = H
2
SO
4
= 2Hydrogens + 1Sulfurs + 4Oxygens
d. If there is parenthesis- the little number outside gets
MULTIPLIED by each subscript inside
a. Mg(OH)
2
= 1 Mg + 2 O + 2 H

Quick Practice (2 mins.)
Write down each of the elements in the
compound
a. CO

b. HCN
c. Ca(NO

1 Carbon, 2 Oxygen
1 Hydrogen, 1 Carbon, 1 Nitrogen
1 Calcium, 2 Nitrogen, 6 Oxygen
Independent Practice
Complete the problems on your worksheet ON
YOUR OWN for the first 10 minutes!
For the second 10 minutes you may talk to your
partners to help you through your work!
If you have a question
1. Look at your beautiful notes
2. Ask a peer for a clarification or explanation (you
wont learn if you just copy answers!)
3. Raise your hand and Ill come by! (But only if youve
done 1 and 2 first! )
When you finish your practice packet, complete
the vocabulary words for today!
In Summary
Things to address in your summary:
1. Elements, Compounds, Mixtures
2. Determining the number of atoms in a
compound
3. Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids
Exit Ticket
Once your exit slip is graded, write your mastery
score on your exit slip.
