Experiment Title: Food Testing

Date: 4/9/14 Name: Gemma Bryant, S, S & L

AIM:
To test various food for the presence of Starch, Glucose, Fat and
Protein.

APPARATUS:
Test Tubes, Iodine solution, Benedicts solution, Sodium
Hydroxide, Copper Sulphate, Bunsen Burner, Tripod, Heat mat,
Beaker ,Brown Paper and various food samples.

METHOD:
Starch: Drop a few drops of Iodine on each food sample. A
blue/black colour indicates the presence of Starch.

Glucose: Put sample in a test tube. Add 10 drops of Benedicts
solution and sit in a beaker of warm water for 5 mins. A red
brick colour indicates the presence of Glucose.

Protein: Put a few drops of Sodium Hydroxide and Copper
Sulphate on each food sample. A purple colour indicates the
presence of protein.

Fat: Smear a sample of food onto Brown paper. If it becomes
transparent Fat is present.

RESULTS:

Starch Test Pure starch went blue/ black
straight away.
Glucose Test Pure glucose started off blue
and slowly went a pinky
orange colour from the top.
Protein Test The protein test worked
because it went purple to show
that there was protein.
Fat Test When we rubbed the fat on the
black paper it went transparent.

CONCLUSION:
We found that foods high in:
i) Starch were the biscuit, bread and potato.
ii) Glucose were the biscuit, bread, potato and milk.
iii) Protein were bread, meat and milk.
iv) Fat were apple and meat.

QUESTIONS:
1. What does the body use the following for?
i) Starch: Long term energy. It also gets broken down into
energy.
ii) Glucose: Short term energy
iii) Protein: Used for growth and repair. Used for energy in
the body. It
iv) Fat: Energy storage. Also to protect our organs and to
keep us warm.
