Third Grade- River Oaks Elementary
September 12, 2014, Week Three
Dear Families-

Thank you for attending Open House last night! It
was so great to see you again and discuss all the
wonderful things happening in our classroom. I am
really looking forward to this year. If you would like
to schedule a conference please let me know. My
conference times are Monday- Tuesday-Friday 10:00 to
10:55 and Wednesday 8:45 to 9:30.

We had a wonderful week in room 10! We have been
learning a lot about How We Organize Ourselves. The
students completed a Career Interview over the
weekend. I really appreciate your willingness to help
your student complete this assignment. On Thursday
and Friday we discussed the interview and pulled out
important information to create a chart. The students
then did a gallery walk to learn about various careers.

Next week we will start literacy rotations. The
students will have a work plan that contains their
personal literacy schedule. The work plan will be in
their binder under ELA. Please let me know if you
have any questions about literacy rotations or the
work plans.

Once again thank you for attending Open House last
night. If you were unable to attend Open House and
would like to set up a conference please contact me.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Please let me
know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you for all that you do,

Mrs. Liner
Math
This week we learned about the Problem Solving
Process. In addition we discussed organizing data
using pictographs. Today, the students explored the
difference between sales prices and regular prices.
This is a wonderful lesson that has many connections
to life outside the classroom.
Reading
We continued to read The Lemonade War as a read
aloud. This week the students completed their first
Scholastic Weekly Reader. This had some great articles
and comprehension practice.
English Language Arts
We took spelling test one on Thursday. The students
took the pre-test for Unit 2 today. On Thursday we
discussed peer revising and worked in teams to revise
our current essay. We also completed Unit 1 in
Vocabulary Workshop.
Social Studies
The students took their first Texas Community
Studies paper quiz. We spent some time discussing
how to refer back to the text to prove your answer.
For the first paper quiz the students had the
opportunity to make corrections.
Science
We continued our discussion on the properties of
matter. Students created a properties of matter flip
book. The flip book describes what the property is
and how it can be observed by scientists.
