Math Course 3 Grade 7
This is a standard grade 7 course. It assumes that students are proficient in all addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division skills with decimals and fractions. This course prepares students in all aspects
of a standard Algebra course. The focus is on rational numbers, and their operations, equations and
inequalities. Topics from math strands, such as real number properties, geometric formulas, and
averages, are introduced, integrated and expanded upon throughout the course. Linear equations and
their graphs, properties of right triangles, geometric transformations, and probability will be explored
and will assist in developing deeper math understanding.

Course Content:
The Number System
Work with fractions and decimals to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Use measures of central
tendency to analyze data.
Use expressions to solve problems, follow order of operations, interpreting graphs, powers, and
exponents.
Use and perform arithmetic calculations with integers. Use number properties to solve problems
quicker.
Equations, expressions and functions
Solve one and two-step equations, applying formulas, and solving inequalities.
Solve multi-step equations with fractions and decimals, and inequalities. Find the circumference
of a circle.
Use ratios and rates to look at scale drawings and percent change. Write and solve proportions,
apply the percent equation, and use simple probability.
Graph linear equations using intercepts and slope. Graph linear inequalities.
Geometry
Understand angle pairs and how they relate to different polygons. Use reflections, translations,
rotations, and symmetry of polygons in the coordinate plane.
Identify rational and irrational numbers. Use the Pythagorean Theorem and understand special
right triangles.
Find the area of trapezoids, parallelograms, and circles as well as finding surface area of 3-
dimensional figures, Use volume formulas for prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones.
Probability and Statistics
Use data displays to represent data. Understand the difference between combinations and
permutations, counting method and odds.

Grading Policies: All work is expected to be completed and turned in on time. Work missed die to
absence must be made up in accordance with the policy in the student handbook.
Tests and projects: 40%. Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Students will be encouraged
to retake any test up to 3 times to gain competency and attain their highest possible score.
Projects will be an extended activity over the course of a unit, the time for completion will vary
with unit. Projects will be checked in class for progress throughout the unit. The amount of time
and effort applied to a project will be reflected in the grading. A rubric will be supplied with each
project so student will know the expectations for a high grade.
Quizzes: 30%. Quizzes will be given almost every week. Students will be encouraged to retake
any quiz below an 80%.
Daily work: 30%. Daily work includes homework assignments, class work, notebook, journaling,
informal assessments, participation in class and practice on IXL.

Expectations for student academic and social performance:
Become critical readers and listeners in order to gain information, understanding and
appreciation.
Communicate effectively in written and oral expression/
Critically analyze problems and solve them.
Use various available technology and informational resources to gather and synthesize data.
Appreciate and respect human differences in order to work cooperatively in various settings
Demonstrate ability to resolve conflicts responsibly.
Take responsibility for their own actions.
