Grade 6 Curriculum Overview
Language Arts
- Reading :
-Read 30 minutes each day to practice fluency (daily 5)
-Learn how to select and use appropriate strategies to help reading comprehension
- Participate in two novel studies (The Westing Game and City of Ember)
- Complete weekly reading summaries
- Complete book reports throughout the year to demonstrate reading comprehension
-Writing:
-Write a variety of clear, focused personal writing that connects to personal experiences, ideas and
opinions (weekly journal writing)
-Use writing as a way to present information about a topic in a clear and organized way (essay
writing/daily 5)
-Spelling/Grammar. We will have weekly spelling/grammar lessons and a quiz each Friday
- Speaking:
-Students will be expected to present information through oral presentations on a variety of topics
-Students will be required to share opinions and ideas with the class, and sometimes with their
groups, on different topics throughout the year
-Pronunciation. We will be working on pronunciation with the students in all subjects throughout
grade 6
* We will also be doing reading buddies once a week with the grade 1 class. The students will have the
opportunity to read books to the grade 1 students and form a bond with their reading buddy throughout
the year.
