Metals
are good conductors of heat and
electricity
have a shiny surface appearance
are easy to form and bend
Malleability is the ability of a
substance to be hammered or
beaten into thin sheets.
Ductility is the ability of a
substance to be drawn, pulled, or
extruded through a small opening
to produce a wire.

Nonmetals
are poor conductors of heat and electricity
have a dull surface appearance
are very brittle
Metalloids
have some characteristics of metals and some characteristics of
nonmetals
are semiconductors (conducting electricity only at high temperatures)
may have either a shiny, metallic surface appearance or a dull,
nonmetallic surface appearance
are usually more brittle than metals but are easier to bend and form than
nonmetals

Periodic Table Groups MSN Activity
Use your periodic table (hall pass) + your book
1. Draw staircase as it appears on the PT
2. Label the Elements directly to the left and
right of the line Semi-metals
3. Label the elements to the left Metals
(except Hydrogen, a nonmetal gas)
4. Label the elements to the right Non-
metals
5. In a group, using the worksheet and the
conductivity tester, identify examples of
each & the properties of metals and non-
metals.
6. Each group, write 1,2,or3 Haikus to recall
how elements are arranged on the Periodic
Table

Periodic Table:
The periodic table organizes the different types of atoms, or chemical
elements. The elements are arranged by atomic number in rows and
columns, from left to right and top to bottom. Vertical columns are called
groups or families of elements while periods of elements consist of
horizontal rows.

Group Activity:
(7 people/group, one family/person)
Using your book, to help describe a family,
each person may:
o Write a haiku or poem.
o Provide well-labeled drawings, pictures
and/or diagrams
o Build a model with a clearly written
description
o Turn in next Monday with your group.
o Prepare to present your description.
o Be creative and have fun
