The repetition of the same initial (beginning) sound, or
group of sounds in a series of words, this includes tongue twisters.
Example: She sells seashells by the seashore.
Allusion: a brief reference to a person, event, or place, real or fictitious, or to a work of art. (The problem with this is that if you do not know the original reference you will not understand it.)
Example Harriet Tubman was called the Moses of her time. --- This is a metaphor but it also refers to Moses.
Analogy: A comparison of objects or ideas that appear to be different but are alike in some important way. Example: foot is to sock as hand is to glove or bird :: sky : fish ::water.
Dialect: A variety of language used by people from a particular geographic area. How words are pronounced, their accents, and the variety of ways they are used. Example: Gday mate, would you like to put some shrimp on the Barbie? Australian
Hyperbole: An exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe the statement is true.
Example He was so hungry; he ate that whole cornfield for lunch, stalks and all.
Idioms: Defined as: in having a meaning that cannot be derived from the conjoined meanings of its elements. It is only known through common use.
Example: Its raining cats and dogs. Or this is a piece of cake.
Imagery/ Visualization: The words or phrases a writer uses to create a certain picture in the readers mind. Is based on using the 5 senses (sensory details).
Example then my tongue and mouth puckered up. I could smell Grandmas fresh baked cookies from the driveway.
Irony: 3 types (verbal, dramatic, situational) an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected. Example - Someone posted a video about how boring and useless Facebook is, on Facebook. A beware of dog sign in the yard with a Chihuahua.
Jargon: Specialized language used in a particular field or content area. Example: Basketball foul, hoop, dribble, shoot. Dr. stat, EKG, MRI, cardiovascular
Metaphor: States a fact or draws a verbal picture by the use of comparison. Does not use like or as.
Example: You are what you eat. She is such a pig. Onomatopoeia: The use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound or the sound made by an object or an action.
Example: snap, crackle, pop, bang, boom, zap Personification: A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object.
Example: My teddy bear gave me a hug. Pun: A play on words, usually as a joke
Example: To write with a broken pencil is pointless. HA HA Simile: Uses the words like or as to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike.
Example: He was as busy as a bee. She eats like a pig. Slang: Informal language used by a particular group of people among themselves. Usually created by the youth of a generation.
Example: Yo Dawg! Whaz up? Or groovy, awesome, rad, OMG
Symbolism: the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character Example: In most stories a snake represents something evil. The flag, Liberty bell and eagle represent America.
