To: Randy Delorey, Minister of the Environment
Barrington Tower, 1894 Barrington Street, Suite 1800 PO Box 442, Halifax, NS B3J 2P8 September 24, 2014 Minister Delorey, Almost 20 years ago, an agreement was reached between Halifax County Municipality, the province and residents of Sackville to close the Highway 101 landfill permanently. Today Im asking you to use your powers as Minister to ensure that deal is kept. As Im sure you are well aware, Halifax Regional Municipality is proposing to ship leachate from Otter Lake to the site of the Sackville landfill for treatment and disposal. As is to be expected, this has local residents anxious and worried about the impact this will have on the local environment. Furthermore, the community already hosted the landfill once - it shouldnt have to carry part of that burden again. Minister Delorey, before HRM can proceed with its proposal to ship leachate to the Sackville landfill it must first receive approval from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment. Im asking you to use your Ministerial prerogative and inform your staff not to accept or approve any request from HRM to change or alter the existing permit. I also ask that you reiterate the commitment made by the previous government that no changes will be accepted to the Otter Lake landfill permit either. A deal was made with the people of Sackville and it should be kept. Given the stress this is placing on the community Im asking that you clearly state your intentions to HRM as soon as possible so this matter can be resolved. Tank your for your consideration on this matter, Dave Wilson, MLA Sackville-Cobequid cc: Stephen McNeil, Premier of Nova Scotia Stephen Gough, MLA Sackville-Beaver Bank Bill Horne, MLA Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank
