ORE Part 1 Format

Part 1 of the test comprises two, three-hour written papers, undertaken on a computer and is made
up of Extended Matching Questions (EMQs) and Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) in the form of

Extended matching questions (EMQs)
Extended matching #uestions are grouped into themes$ Each theme has a heading that tells %ou
what the #uestions are a&out$
'ithin each theme there are se(eral num&ered items$ )hese are the #uestions and the pro&lems
%ou ha(e to sol(e$ )here are examples in the next section$
'e recommend that %ou &egin &% reading carefull% the instruction that precedes the num&ered
items$
'e recommend that %ou consider each of the num&ered items and decide what %ou think the
answer is$ *ou should then look for that answer in the list of options a&o(e the items (each of which
is identified &% a letter of the alpha&et)$ +f %ou cannot find the answer %ou ha(e thought of, %ou
should look for the option which, in %our opinion, is the &est answer to the pro&lem posed$
,or each num&ered item, %ou must choose -.E, and onl% one, of the options$ *ou ma% feel that
there are se(eral possi&le answers to an item, &ut %ou must choose the &est one from the option
list$ +f %ou enter more than one answer on the answer sheet %ou will gain no mark for the #uestion
e(en though %ou ma% ha(e gi(en the right answer along with one or more wrong ones$
-n occasions %ou ma% feel that more than one option offers a credi&le answer$ +n such
circumstances the examiners are looking for the single answer that is generall% accepted to accord
with current &est practice or clinical guidelines$
+n each theme there are more options than items, so not all the options will &e used as answers$
)his is wh% the instruction sa%s that some options ma% not &e used at all$
"lternati(el% a gi(en option ma% pro(ide the answer to more than one item$ ,or example, for two
different scenarios the most likel% diagnosis could &e the same$ +n this case the option would &e
used more than once$
