My Class Vision | 2014-2015 [John Tran] [Sacramento Charter High School] [10 th -12 th /Algebra 1 repeater & Trigonometry] GUIDING QUESTIONS YOUR INPUT NEXT STEPS TO FLESH OUT THIS SECTION: What do you still need to find out so that you can strengthen this part of your vision? How will you seek out that information? WHY YOURE HERE: Who are you in this work? Whats the reason why you get out of bed every day for your students? Whats your fire when this work gets difficult and the thing that most centers you to continue doing it? As you are probably discovering more about who you are by doing this job, what do you value and care about most? How does that align to this work?
My motivation for being here is that this community is not just any community it is my home. I was born here and grew up here and I am who I am today because of this community. This community is my family and I want to make sure my family has all the resources and opportunities it needs to be successful I need to keep pushing myself to solidify this vision and also strengthen it to embody who I fully am. I also need to watch my health and take care of myself as stress can sometimes break down my resolve and make me forget why I am sometimes here. YOUR VALUES & IDENTITY: What are your values? What values do you prioritize in your work? What values of yours do you think should live in your classroom and teaching? My values are the following:
Discipline Respect Ambition Grit/Perseverance with a passion Optimism Navigation/ Nice Selflessness /Service
I think all these values are an important part of my classroom and should live in my classroom and my teachings.
I need to make sure I incorporate activities sometimes direct/ indirect that can enhance these values in students as they learn and live. THE CURRENT REALITY/CONTEXT: What is it like now? What is the current reality for most of your students at your I think it is currently about the following:
Being Discipline Being Respectful Being Ambitious Being Gritty I need to incorporate maybe a system that can encourage this environment whether with incentives but also for students to My Class Vision | 2014-2015 [John Tran] [Sacramento Charter High School] [10 th -12 th /Algebra 1 repeater & Trigonometry] school? Whats their typical life path? (E.g. school, grade and subject-specific typical achievement levels; graduation rates; community college graduation rates; etc.; and if teaching SPED or ELL, get to that level of specificity in data). Does that align with their hopes & dreams for their future? Is that acceptable to you, fair to the community and fair to your students? Why or why not?
The reality for most students at school is that based on their behaviors, learning from mistakes, and their level of proactivity they will be successful. understand that these characteristics are valuable for their entire lives. COMMUNITY VALUES, IDENTITY, & ASPIRATIONS: What does the community value? What do families want for their kids? What do students want for themselves? What values of theirs (both students & families) do you think should live in your classroom and teaching?
Ultimately we all want as a community and family for our child/student to succeed.
Value success and learning from mistakes are very important.
Connect with parents/ guardians on creating support systems to help them child succeed. THE PATHWAYS TO EXPANDED LIFE OPPORTUNITIES: What are the opportunities that exist between where your students are at right now and adulthood that can help put them on track to having access to all opportunities? Knowing your students realities and College is a great opportunity for my students to succeed and become more advanced critical mathematicians but hopefully leaders.
Also holding students to high expectations and teaching them to advocate for themselves on a professional level and making sure that they have the grit necessary to succeed in a stressful environment like college.
Push my students to become critical thinkers and leaders at school. My Class Vision | 2014-2015 [John Tran] [Sacramento Charter High School] [10 th -12 th /Algebra 1 repeater & Trigonometry] their aspirations, what MUST change for students to be on that path? (Think about academic abilities, particular courses, outside of school experiences, etc.).
THE OUTCOMES WE ARE STRIVING FOR (FOUR BROADER OUTCOMES): What will it take to get students to that aspirational life path in terms of academics and beyond? How will you measure whether students have met these? Knowledge & Skills Growth I want students by the end of the year to have mastered content very well and be able to explain and teach content to their peers.
Personal Growth I want students by the end of the year to grow a positive relationship with mathematics and be able build foundational characteristics and systems that will help them be successful ie. being proactive, helping students, being respectful, asking questions, being patient in problem solving, think critically, and building perseverance as a student and a human being.
Social, Political, and Cultural Consciousness I want students to understand the reality of why math is important in our world and also understand how it affects our lives in the future for better or for worse and how we as students make that choice.
Access Holding students to high expectations and following through with making sure they have the support and also systems necessary for them to achieve and be ready for a college level environment. Whether it is academic work, consequences for not meeting expectations, and also stronger support group for the students achievements.
Continuing to gauge how students are doing academically through assessments and data.
As for personal growth, consciousness, and access it is important to build systems in place to help gauge these potential outcomes. So make systems for these systems. FAMILY & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: What things outside of the classroom are necessary to change in I think parent communication is really important so that there is a partnership in place that can be effective in supporting the students success.
Continue to set aside time to make positive phone calls home and maybe visits to the school or at home. My Class Vision | 2014-2015 [John Tran] [Sacramento Charter High School] [10 th -12 th /Algebra 1 repeater & Trigonometry] order to make a difference? Outside of the classroom, what will you take on in order to ensure that you are truly changing the game for your students?
