Learning Objectives and Assessments: Objective: Students will continue to gain independence in using the traditional algorithm of multiplication. Assessment: Students will be assessed via observation in small groups. Observations will be made in the workshop binder in the math section next to each students name to gauge understanding. The system used will be + for each understanding, - for a misconception. Students with less than 75% of marking of a + will have one-on-one conferences the following day. (Formative).
Students independent work will be reviewed, and used to inform small group instruction and one-on-one conferences. (Formative)
The How to Guide on solving two digit by two digit multiplication problems using the traditional algorithm -which will be assigned on Tuesday, and the final copy created on Pages will be due by the end of math workshop on Tuesday, November 5th 2013. (Summative) Standard: 1. 5.NBT.5: Multiplying whole numbers with standard algorithm
Rationale: Students will be demonstrating an understanding of the process of two digit by two digit multiplication using the traditional algorithm.
Integration of Other Content Areas: Explanatory writing will be integrated in the form of explaining how to use the traditional algorithm that will be part of the independent work for the students.
CCSS: 5.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
Differentiated Instruction: The workshop framework allows for differentiation by grouping students with similar needs into the same instructional groups. Students were based on a pre-assessment given at the beginning of our multiplication unit. Oranges: 3 students who need the most support (A, B and C) Lemons: 4 students who need an average amount of support (D, E, F and G) Limes: 5 students who need an average amount of support (H, I J, K and L) Raspberries: 5 students who need the least amount of support (M, N, O, P and Q.
Modifications: E.R. - M will be challenged with three digit by two digit multiplication and to incorporate three digit by two digit multiplication in her independent work. In guided math group, on Tuesday M will be challenged with larger numbers. She is grouped with students ` who have a strong grasp on multiplication and who are capable of critical thinking in mathematics. 504 - J will have frequent check-ins. Has preferential seating for mini lessons. He is seated up front close to the Promethean board so that his full attention is on the Promethean board. I will also check that he understands the independent work before he begins. Check-ins before starting independent work (B, A and C) in guided math group. Behavior: B: frequent reminders to stay on task. A: frequent reminders to stay on task, and he can work at the front of the room if he has trouble focusing.
Materials, Resources, and Technology: Promethean Board Math Workshop Notebook Developed word problems for different guided math groups
Teaching and Learning Sequence:
10:45 - 10:55 Mini Lesson Anticipatory Set: Review key words in word problems to use multiplication. (times, of, product of, multiplied by, or increased by a factor of)
Modeling and Think Aloud: Flip chart showing a word problem. Model how to solve the word problem using a think aloud.
Guided Practice: Students solve a word problem on Promethean Board- solve in math workshop notebook. Check the answer with teacher to get independent work (paper and pencil).
10:55 - 11:40 Independent Working Time Paper and pencil work, practicing using the traditional algorithm differentiated by group. Oranges: two digit by two digit multiplication with access to a multiplication table to help focus on the process rather than the math facts and a list of keywords to use in multiplication word problems. Lemons: two digit by two digit multiplication. Students will have access to a list of keywords to use in multiplication word problems. Limes: two digit by two digit multiplication. Some three digit by two digit multiplication. Raspberries: A mix of two digit by two digit multiplication problems and three digit by two digit multiplication problems . 11:00 - 11:40 2 Moby Max Rotations Students will work on lessons individualized based on the needs of the placement test. 11:00 - 11:20 M, N, O, P, Q and I 11:20 - 11:40 C, A, B, K and L
10:55 - 11: 40 Three Guided Math Groups (15 minutes each) Story Problems created for each guided math group. Students are allowed to check in with neighbors if they need assistance. Problems are attached to lesson.
10:55 - 11:10 Oranges: Word problems (two digit by two digit multiplication problems) simpler numbers and access to a multiplication table. Attached to lesson. (Conference with B and A) 11:10 - 11:25 Lemons: Word problems (two digit by two digit and three digit by two digit multiplication problems) More complex numbers and access to multiplication table if needed. Attached to lesson.(Conference with D and G) 11:25 - 11:40 Limes: Word problems (two digit by two digit and three digit by two digit multiplication problems). Attached to lesson. (Conference with J and K).
11:40 - 11:45 Debrief and Closure Debrief: How did we do with transitions today? (thumbs, up, sideways or down How did we do with working quietly and respectfully? (thumbs up, sideways or down) Closure: Questions on exit slip that you still have about the traditional algorithm of multiplication to be answered while conferencing with students.

Oranges:
1. Miss Rocheforts garden has 15 tulip bulbs. Miss Rochefort has 26 times as many daisies as tulips. How many daisies are in Miss Rocheforts garden?
2. Polk Elementary School has three classes for each grade level kindergarten through fifth grade. If there is an average of 27 students per classroom, about how many students attend Polk Elementary School?
3. Miss Rochefort assigns an average of 19 minutes of homework 4 nights a week (not including reading). If the school year lasts 36 weeks, then about how much time are Miss Rocheforts students spending on homework (not including reading homework) throughout the entire school year?
4. Portland has a public bus fleet of 27 buses. Each bus can seat 44 people at a time. If all buses were in use at the same time and each bus was full, how many people would be seated on all 27 buses?
5. Miss Rochefort has collected 38 stickers. Miss Fellman has collected 46 times as many stickers as Miss Rochefort. How many stickers does Miss Fellman have? How many stickers do Miss Rochefort and Miss Fellman have altogether?
Answer Key:
1. 15 x 26 = 390 2. 3 x 6 = 18 ! 18 x 27 = 486 3. 19 x 4 = 76 ! 76 x 36 = 2,736 4. 27 x 44 = 1,188 5. 38 x 46 = 1,748
