Lesson
Introduction
Introducing
the topic
Engagement
of the
learners
1. Teacher introduces the focus of the lesson What makes a place special?
The first activity is to encourage the students to participate and find interest
in the topic of the sub key question.
The teacher asks the students to sit on the carpet in a circle and close their
eyes.
They are to think about their own special place and come up with a
describing word that means the same as special and two more words that
describe their special place. Students are prompted to use their creativity
and imagination while thinking about the place in silence.
The teacher allows the students to express their ideas by taking turns going
around the circle while each student tells the whole class their describing
words. While the students express, the teacher writes these words on a
word chart which is named Our Special Place and later displayed on the
Geography Bulletin Board in the back of the classroom.
This activity will encourage a whole class discussion about their answers
discovering that some peoples describing words are similar and some are
different.

2. The teacher settles the students by transitioning them to sit back at their desks
to begin the next activity (body of the lesson).

3. The teacher directs the students to work individually, open their Geography
note pads and draw a picture of their special place. They are encouraged to use
coloured crayons and some describing words. (This activity is completed by the
students while some students go with the teacher to complete the next activity.
Each students gets a turn at both activities in the body of the lesson).
4. Recorded podcast interview Individual task (used for assessment)
This is a student-centred activity - Each individual sits with teacher and
is encouraged to describe their special place and identify the important
features of this particular place.
The students are prompted to tell the teacher about their special place,
using sentences to describe using a framework of the following
questions, allowing students to add more facts if they wish:
What is your special place?
Where is it located?
Why is it special to you? How do you feel when you go there?
Does anybody else visit this special place?

The Podcast Microphone is used as a primary resource for this activity. Students
are able to hold the microphone while speaking. This activity allows for
differentiation within the class to suit all learning needs and abilities.

5. Students discuss and reflect on the concepts that they have learnt throughout
the activities. The teacher encourages a class discussion on ways that they can
help look after their special place, introducing the beginning of the next sub key
question in the next lesson (How can we look after the places that we live in).
The following questions are asked to the students to conclude the lesson:
What did we learn today?
Is each persons special place the same? Why/ why not?
What are some ways that we can help care for our special place?
What is one thing that you would do to care for your special place?
