Unit Orientation Ask students for a show of hands how
many have seen an elephant. Mention that
they are an endangered animal, and
discuss with students what they think that
might mean. Introduce the focus text, and
discuss the cover of the book. As a class,
create a KWL chart. Walk through the text,
discussing the type of text it is and looking
at the contents page.
Lesson 1

Building knowledge of the
field
This unit will provide students with a range
of texts to increase their background
knowledge of endangered animals.
Engaging activities and research tasks will
help ensure the development of
knowledge, understanding and skills
relating to English and science curriculum
content descriptions.

Utilising the non-fiction
focus text
Burnie, D. (2008). Countdown to
Extinction: Animals in Danger! (1st ed.).
Oxford: Oxford University Press.
This text will be used to introduce the topic
of endangered animals. Students will be
required to complete a number of activities
using the focus text.
