Conjugating ER verbs
Conju.what?!
Remember
Subjects and verbs?
Yesterday, we learned about subjects
and subject pronouns. Combining what
we learned yesterday with todays lesson
on verbs will allow us to create very basic
sentences in French!
Without verbs we cannot conjugate.
What is conjugation?
Verb conjugation refers to how a verb
changes to show a different person,
tense, number or mood.
Ex: the verb to be conjugated in English
looks like:
I am / You are / He, she, it, one is / We are
/ You are / They are

There are 6 different persons:

Verb families
Conjugation in french follows patterns
that are the same for verb families.
For instance there are a set of verbs
ending in er, ir, re.
The verbs in these families have
similarities when conjugated.
When we learn what the pattern is for one
family we know how to conjugate all the
verbs that fall into this verb family.
ER verbs
Today we are going to learn how to
conjugate regular ER verbs.

Some regular ER verbs we know are:
Entrer
Parler
couter
Regarder
Commencer
The Rules for ER verbs
1. find the stem of the verb by taking out
the ending ER.
Ex:
parler becomes parl
couter becomes cout
Regarder becomes regard
The Rules for ER verbs
2. Combine the stem with the specific ER
family endings for each person/pronoun:

And you have
Je parle
Tu parles
Il / Elle / On parle
Nous parlons
Vous parlez
Elles / Ils parlent
NOTE: although the endings for the je, tu,
il/elle and ils/elles forms are spelled
differently, they are pronounced the
same.

Now you try
On p. 43 take 3 minutes to silently write
the stems of the verbs.
