Who were they? and Where did they live?

3-2.1: Compare the culture, governance, and

physical environment of the major Native
American tribal groups of South Carolina,
including the Cherokee, Catawba, and
Yemassee
Indians or Native Americans were the
first people to live on the land that is now
South Carolina. Some people think that
there were originally between 40-50
different tribes in S.C. The three main
tribes or groups that occupied S.C. are
the Cherokee Indians, the Catawba, and
the Yemassee Indians. The Native
Americans lived throughout the state.
Some lived near the mountains, some
lived in the lowlands, and some lived
near the coast of S.C.
*The Cherokee Indians lived in the northwestern Blue Ride
Mountains.
*The Cherokee Indians built towns along rivers to have
access for fishing and traveling by canoe to other Cherokee
towns for trading.
*The Cherokee had a well-traveled trail that ran from the
mountains to the Atlantic Ocean
* They fought in wars against settlers.

The Cherokee Indian homes were built around the Council
House.
Cherokee women sat on the village councils and had a
significant voice in whether or not the tribe went to war.
They lived in longhouses during the summer and wattle
and daub houses in the winter.
They hunted/gathered, fished and farmed.

cook, wash, drink, and travel by canoe to other
villages and towns for trade.
