Mathematics Lesson Plan

Teacher thinking:

Context of lesson

Say, understand and reason with number sequences increasing by
twos, fives and tens from any starting point including using
calculators. Introduce skip counting by threes and fours and further
by sevens, nines and beyond for able students.

Duration of lesson

35 minutes
Group size: 24 students

Domain focus: Number number sequences

Year level: Year Two

Students
background
knowledge
Students have already practised skip counting in Term One. They
are familiar with skip counting by twos, fives and tens. They are
familiar with counting games such as Buzz and those available on
the interactive whiteboard.

Student teacher
focus and
rationale

Create worksheets for different abilities to include skip counting by
threes, fours and beyond. Search for patterns in counting.
Use games on interactive whiteboard to involve students in
counting at different levels.

Looking for
learning:

Evidence of competency in skip counting by taking learning of skip
counting in 2s, 5s and 10s further to 3s, 4s and for some
students 7s and 9s. Students may use counting frames to assist
them. Looking for evidence that students can predict the next
number in a number line e.g. 3, 6, 9. Student discussion about
patterns made by skip counting.

The flow of the lesson:
Stage Teacher action Student action Time
Introduction Spooky sequences by 5s and
10s- game on the interactive
whiteboard.

Class count (1) game to count
by 3s and 4s, this introduces
counting by these numbers to
the majority of students.

Students to participate in saying
the missing number and
completing number patterns.

Students to count along together
in 3s and 4s, using the
interactive whiteboard game to
assist them.

Body Worksheet 1- Count by 3s and
4s on the hundred grid.

All student to complete
worksheet 1 by working out how
to count by 3s and 4s on the
hundred grid. Students need to
circle numbers.

mins

Worksheets 2- reinforces
counting by 5s and 10s by
filling in the blanks.
Introduction to counting by 3s
and 4s by filling in a numbers
table.

Worksheet 2- counting by 3s
and 4s on a number table.
Counting by 3s and 4s
starting a different numbers.
Introduction to counting by 7s
and 9s.

Worksheet 3- counting by 3s,
in number table. Fill in the
blanks, counting by 3s, 4s
and 8s starting at different
numbers. Counting by 7s, 9s.
11s, 13s. Counting
backwards by 27s.

Group 1-Students practice their
counting by 5s and 10s and are
introduced to counting by 3s and
4s. Students may use the
hundred chart and counting
frames to assist them.

Group 2- Students practice
counting by 3s and 4s. Begin to
count by 7s and 9s. Students
may use counting frames to
assist them.

Group 3- Students fill in number
table by counting by 3s.
Students then begin counting by
different numbers to find different
patterns. Students challenge
themselves to work out the last
problem, counting backwards
and working out what they are
counting by.
Conclusion Bring back students as a
whole group to sit in front of
the interactive white board.
Discussion about different
patterns that skip counting
makes on hundred grid.

Show examples of patterns of
5s, 3s, 4s and 11s in paint
game on interactive
whiteboard.

Student can report on the
different patterns that they have
found while skip counting 3s and
4s on the hundred grid.
