"Use a pi cture. It' s worth a thousand words.

"
~ Arthur Bri sbane

A word cloud is picture of words with more frequently used words given a greater emphasis.
Make a word cloud to closely analyze one of the characters youve read about so far: Rifka, Victor, Michael, Rikki tikki tavi,
Nag/Nagaina, Felix, Antonio, or Margot.
1. In Google Drive, open a new document and call it Word Cloud Project.

2. Typing in your document, make a list of 10 powerful words or phrases that describe a character from the book.

3. Then, pull 3-5 excerpts directly from the story that describe the character. Be sure to put quotes around the excerpts.
4. Watch the Wordle How to Create video (teachertube) on Ms. Matiss class weebly: www.msmatis.weebly.com
Tip: Use the tilde symbol ~ to connect words in the cloud - Word Clouds - Beyond the Basics (youtube)
5. Go to the Wordle website http://www.wordle.net

Name:

6. Enter the character's name in the box 5 times. This will give the name the greatest emphasis in the word cloud.
7. Connect the first and last names with a ~ tilde. Example: George~Washington
8. Enter your 10 words or short phrases (2 or 3 words) that describe the character. When you enter a short phrase, connect the words
with ~ tilde symbols. Remember the activity on direct & indirect characterization!
*To add emphasis to the more important words or phrases, enter them more than once. Note: No more than 4 times,
so the name is the largest.
9. Enter your text excerpts from the story. When you enter the excerpt, remember to connect the words with ~ tilde symbols.
*To add emphasis to the more important text passages, enter them more than once.
Note: No more than 4 times so the name is the largest.
10. Proofread your entries. It is funny how spelling errors and typos sneak into the best work.
11. When you are finished - Click GO.
12. A beginning sample of your word cloud will appear.
Clicking the Randomize button will create a new look for your word cloud.
Use the Edit, Language, Font, Layout and Color menus at top of the window to adjust the appearance of your cloud.
When you are satisfied - Click Print.

12. Take a screenshot of your word cloud to save it on your desktop.
Command~Shift~4 will make a cross hairs appear on the screen. Stretch it across your entire word cloud,
and a screenshot will save to your desktop.
13. Rename your screenshot with your full name.
14. Attach your word cloud to an email, and send it to me at lockwoodb@penntrafford.org
