Assignment 1: Information Literacy
Apples iPhone: Security and Privacy
In the article, Privacy Questions over Health Kit, Watch Apple a Grilling from
Connecticuts attorney general, the author, Tung states that Connecticut attorney general,
George Jepsen and regulators has asked Apple to reveal how it will monitor and enforce privacy
policies. Apple claims that health information will be encrypted; all Health apps required a
privacy policy; any apps that store users date in iCloud will be rejected, and it doesnt want
developer to sell user information collected through Health apps for advertising but allow them
to share date for medical research. However, regulators want to know how it intends to enforce
the provision, and what information the apps will collect from users in the first place.
The article, Security research: iOS security had been intentionally compromised by
Apple, which was found on Google, and the article, Apple iOS 8 Receives A Security
Upgrade, Which Puts Users Privacy Above All Regards! which was found on Bing, both talk
about the Apples iOS security. Comparing the results from these two search engines, I think that
Google is better than Bing because Google is more effective and has more information than
Bing. For example, when I search for iPhones security and privacy, Google has about
50,500,000 results, but Bing has only 47,100,000 results on this topic. Furthermore, when I

search on Google, more relevant information will come first, but on the Bing, it is arranged by
time; more current will come in the top. Therefore, I prefer Google.
The article, Security researcher: iOS security has been intentionally compromised by
Apple, was written by Chris Smith on Jul. 21, 2014. This article was relevant to my topic, and it
explains that Apples complex tools inside iOS would allow Apple to share certain users data
at the request of law enforcement without user knowledge. The information is trustworthy and
objective, and it is supported by evidences. Smith wrote this article to inform; he reported the
researcher, Zdziarskis research, and he is qualified to write this article by giving credits to
Zdziarski.
The two scholarly journal articles on the CCBC library databases I used are Apple
iPhone security, privacy claims exaggerated, researcher says; Black Hat presentation discusses
iPhone privacy and security mechanisms, and Will iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite Keep Us Safer?
I found these two articles by enter the keywords iPhone privacy and security. First article
which was found in Business insights databases, provides a lot of examples of iPhone apps
involving privacy violations, such as Aurora Feint and MogoRoad. Second article which was
found in Academic OneFile databases, states that Apple appear to be less about adding new
security and privacy features and the details of some security enhancements are a bit murkier.
Comparing the two articles, Security researcher: iOS security has been intentionally
compromised by Apple, and Apple iPhone security, privacy claims exaggerated, researcher
says; Black Hat presentation discusses iPhone privacy and security mechanisms, we could
discover the differences on ease of access, Timeline and Authority. The second article which was
found in CCBC databases was more reliable, reputable and safer than first article which was

found in Google. However, Google online article is easy to get access to than the article in
CCBC databases; moreover, Google online article on one topic is more current than the article in
CCBC databases, and it is updated frequently. For instance, the article, Security researcher: iOS
security has been intentionally compromised by Apple, was published on Jul, 2014; another one
found in CCBC databases was Feb, 2010.
