Procedure
1. Obtain
an
Erlenmeyer
flask
and
a
balloon.
Stretch
out
the
balloon
several
times
so
its
not
so
tight.
2. Pour
20
mL
of
Vinegar
into
the
flask.
3. Put
one
flattened
teaspoon
of
baking
soda
into
the
balloon
using
the
funnel.
4. Stretch
the
balloon
over
the
mouth
of
the
flask
WITHOUT
letting
baking
soda
fall
into
the
flask.
5. Tip
the
balloon
up
so
the
baking
soda
falls
into
the
vinegar.
6. Describe
all
of
the
changes
you
see
in
the
bottle
and
the
balloon
in
the
space
below.
Be
particularly
careful
to
look
for
signs
that
a
chemical
reaction
has
taken
place.

2. Based
on
your
observations,
how
could
you
use
this
experiment
to
prove
to
someone
that
baking
soda
and
vinegar
contain
potential
energy?
What
kind
of
potential
energy
does
it
have?

3. Study
the
chemical
equation
for
the
reaction
between
baking
soda
and
vinegar,
which
is
written
below.
Label
the
reactants
and
the
products.

4. Compare
the
number
and
type
of
atoms
in
the
reactants
with
the
number
and
type
of
atoms
in
the
products.
What
do
you
notice
about
them?

5. Is
mass
created
or
destroyed
when
baking
soda
is
mixed
with
Vinegar?
Yes
/
No
Explain.

6.
What
is
a
chemical
reaction?
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
7.
What
kind
of
change
occurs
as
a
result
of
a
chemical
reaction?
_______________________________________________________
8.
What
are
the
atoms/molecules
on
the
left
side
of
a
chemical
equation
called?
______________________________________
9.
What
are
the
atoms/molecules
on
the
right
side
of
a
chemical
equation
called?

10.
Where
do
the
atoms
in
the
products
come
from?
______________________________________________________________________
11.
Big
numbers
written
before
atoms/molecules
are
called
_________________________________________
and
they
tell
you
how
many
of
a
certain
type
of
__________________________________________
there
are.
12.
Small
numbers
written
after
atoms/molecules
are
called
_____________________________________________________
and
they
tell
you
how
many
_______________________________________________
of
a
certain
element
are
in
a
molecule.
13.
Chemical
equations
must
be
_________________________________________________.
This
means
that
if
you
have
1
carbon
atom
in
the
reactants,
you
should
also
have
___________
carbon
atom
in
the
products.
14.
Another
way
of
saying
an
equation
is
balanced
is
that
________________________________
is
conserved.
When
you
look
at
a
balanced
chemical
equation,
how
do
you
know
that
mass
is
indeed
conserved?

four
things
that
provide
evidence
a
chemical
reaction
has
taken
place.
