This article explains how the line between having certain personality traits and having a
personality disorder is thin and blurry. According to the article, people with a mental illness may
be viewed as irresponsible and/or lazy. Some people do not see it as legitimate as a physical
illness. Research has shown that mental health disorders appear to have a biologic component,
much like disorders that are considered neurologic. There has been a movement to
deinstitutionalize mentally ill patients and support them so they can live in communities.
Research has also shown that curtain interactions between a mentally ill patient and family
members can improve or worsen their condition.
This article is a great source because it is factual. It is based on research and surveys conducted
over a few years. It gives some of societys view points on the subject. It explains it clearly and
is easily understandable.
This article helps me conduct my paper by giving me some of societys view points on mental
illness. It has given me a little bit of background on what people think about psychiatric patients.
I can use this article to conduct my research paper because of its numbers and facts.

Meikle, James. "Attitudes Improving towards Mental Illness, Survey Shows." The Guardian.
Guardian News and Media, 8 June 2011. Web. 9 Sept. 2014.

This article is about how negative public attitudes toward people with mental health issues may
take a generation shift. More people now view mental illness just like any other illness. Even
though more people realize this, some people are not as open to the subject. According to the
article one in six people believe the main cause of mental illness is lack of self- discipline and
willpower. In a survey, one in four would trust a women who had been in a mental health
hospital to babysit a child. 17% thought that a mental health facility in a residential area
downgraded the neighborhood. A lot of fear and prejudice remain despite some improvements.
People often say the stigma they face is as bad, if not worse, than the mental health problems
they suffer from.
The article is a very good source because it tells you how some mental patients feel. I find this
source to be very reliable. This article is based on how some people with mental patients feel.
This article will fit very well in my research paper. This article make realize some of the feeling
that mental health have. It really opens my eyes and makes me want to research more. This
article helps support my argument because it gives an understanding of their views.

Thompson, Dennis. "Even Today, the Stigma of Mental Illness Won't Fade." US News.
U.S.News & World Report, 29 Dec. 2011. Web. 25 Sept. 2014.

This article describes how media influences negative representation in the media. In fictional
accounts of mental illness, people with a disorder are often seen as a deranged lunatic and are
rarely given sensitive treatment. They are shown as a danger to society. Because of this people
with a mental disorder are afraid to come forward and get treatment for their illness. As a result
of this, people with a mental illness often feel isolated, afraid, and rejected be society. With this
stigma, people will not seek professional help until they are near suicide or they are suffering
from serve symptoms. If you were diagnosed with cancer, you would tell people so that you can
be supported. If you were to tell people you have mental illness, you would not necessarily get
the same level of support.
This source is very useful. It explains how the medias perception of mental illness can affect
those with a mental illness. If the media gives a negative attitude towards mental disorders, the
public will develop the attitude.
This article fits perfectly into my research paper because it shows how easily one can be
negatively influenced. The negative output by society can prevent people the treatment they need
for their mental disorder. Without the necessary treatment, their overall health can deteriorate.
This puts them at much greater risk.
