assumptionsaboutwhatthereaderdoesordoesnotknow.Includeeverything.(Dont,forexample,assume
thatthereaderknowsthatyouwilluseMSAccesstocreateyourdatabase.)

Theprojectisfortheclientmaggiecoylewhoisthedirectorofthedolphintheatre.Thedolphin
theatredoestheatricalperformancesandatthistimeisdoingaoneweekstagingofan
inspectorcalls.Theywillbedoingaseriesofperformancestoletpupilsattendaspartoftheir
GCSEcourse.

Thedolphintheatreholds120seatsandtheseseatsarepricedat8eachfortheStalls,12
eachfortheFrontStallsand15eachfortheCircle.Therearealsoeightstallswhichviewhas
beenslightlyblockedbyinconvenientlyplacedpillars,thesestallscost5

ProjectOverview
TheprojectinvolvestheclientMaggieCoyle,Thetheatredirectorwhowantsanewbooking
system.AtthistimetheEnquiriesandbookingscanonlybemadebytelephone.Theseare
handledbythereceptionist.Theyalsouseaflatfiledatabaseforthebookingsystem.This
systemispronetoerrorslikedoublebookingsbecausewithperhapsthousandsofrecordsina
file,itcanbeaverylongprocesstospotduplicatedrecords.Soareclientwantsustocreatea
newbookingsystemtofixtheseproblems.Shewantsthedatabasetohavesecureaccess
requiringusernameandpasswordtoaccessit,toberobustandlastlyinativeandsimpletouse.
Usingarelationaldatabasewouldbethebiggestimprovementtohelpfixsomeofthese
problems.Themainbenefitofarelationaldatabaseisthatdatadoesn'thavetobeduplicated.
Reducingdataduplicationreducestheamountofdatawhichneedstobestored,makingthe
databasesmaller.Italsoreducestheriskofmistakes,becauseeverytimeyouhavetotypethe
samedatain,thereisariskyoucouldmakeamistake.

Theprojectwillbringmanybenefitssuchasanewmoreefficientbookingsystem.Thiswillmeannoerrors
likedoublebookingswhichtheoldflatfiledatabasewasproneto.Alsothesystemwillmakebookingmuch
fasterandefficientwhichmeansthereceptionistwillhavemoretimetocompleteotherjobsandbrings
costsdownastheywillbeabletodomoreworkforthesamepay.

Theprojectcouldalsobringsomepotentialriskslikethebookingsystembeingtoocomplicatedforthe
receptionistwhothenmayneedtobetrained.Anotherriskisthatbecausethedatabasewillbemore
efficientandfasterthereceptionistwillhavemoretimetodomoretasks.Thiscouldresultinthemdoingtoo
muchworkmakingthemunhappyasthereworkloadwillbeatamaximine.

ImpactonPersonnelandPractices
Thiswillmainlyaffectthereceptionistasitwillmeantheywillbeabletogetbookingsdonemoreefficiently
withoutanyerrors.Thisleavesthemmoretotocompleteothertaskssotheirworkloadwillincrease
meaningtheywillgetmoreworkdone.Theproblemwiththisisthatitcouldresultinalossofjob
satisfactionwhichcanhavealotofeffectslikejobstress,iftheyarenothappywiththeirjobtheyaremore
likelytosufferfromstress.Anothereffectcouldbelowoverallmoralwhichcanaffectotherworkersaround
theworkplaceforexampleifanemployeeismiserableanyonetheycomeincontacttoocouldbeaffected
bythisloweringtheirmoral.Lastlyallthiscontributestolowproductivitywhichmeansintheendtheymay
notworkveryhardnotpayingattentionoffocusduringtheirworksolessworkisdone.Sooveralltheextra
workloadthatisgivenhastobereasonableanddoable.
