WHY EXPLORATION
~ Europe had been trading with Asia for dyes, spices, perfumes, gold, and jewels
~ Middleman was a trader who buys goods from a producer and sells them to traders
~ Based on writings of Marco polo, people began looking for a shorter trade route to Asia
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
~ An Italian captain believed that the shortest route to Asia was west.
~King Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain for his voyage
SPAIN AND THE AGE OF EXPLORATION
~ Columbus discovered San Salvador Island {part of todays Bahamas} in 1492
~ Columbus later explored the coasts of central and South America and other Caribbean islands
~ Amerigo Vespucci sailed along the South American coast in 1499; a mapmaker named the new
land America
SPANISH CONQUISTADORS
~ Conquistadors- group of Spanish explores searching for gold and wealth.
~Ponce de Leon- discovered Florida, searched for the fountain of youth, and discovered the
Gulf Stream
HERNANDO DE SOTO SEARCHES GEORGIA FOR GOLD
~ In 1540, Spanish explorer hernando de Soto, with hundreds of men, marched north from Tampa,
Florida into southwest Georgia {near todays Albany}
~ De Sotos weapons, plated armor, and horses overwhelmed the native Americans; thousand of
American Indians in Georgia died, many from disease brought by the Spaniards
FRENCH EXPLORATIONS
~France sent jean ribault and Ren de laudonniere to start a colony and look for riches
~ French Huguenots went with them
~ They landed in Florida, but moved farther north and built a fort in present day south Carolina-
fort charlesfort
~ Ran out of supplies, and returned to France
REN DE LAUDONNIERE
~ In 1564 France sent laudonniere back to Florida with 304 Huguenots
~He established fort Caroline in present day Jacksonville, FL
~They soon ran out of supplies
~France sent jean ribault with reinforcements to help
SPANISH COLONIES
~ 1565 king Phillip II of Spain sent Pedro Menendez de Aviles to Florida
~They crushed the French and established fort St. Augustine
~ St. Augustine is the oldest European settlement in the U.S.
SPAINS EARLY MISSIONS IN GEROGIA
~ In 1566, Spain established missions on Georgias Cumberland island St. Catherines island,
called Santa Catalina. During the same century, posts were established at sapelo and St.
Simons island
~ The Spanish missionaries called the region guale {pronounced wallie} after the guale
Indians
~ The purpose of the missions was to convert Native Americans to Catholicism






REASONS FOR ENGLISH COLONIZATION
~bad economic conditions in England {over populated}
THE LOST COLONY
~1585 queen Elizabeth gave permission to sir Walter Raleigh to begin
colony on Roanoke island, present day Virginia
~They ran out of supplies and returned to England
~1587 Raleigh tried again on Roanoke, names john white governor
~Ran put of supplies and white returned to England for more supplies
~When white returned the colonists had completely disappeared
~Cro carved in a tree and CROATOAN carved in a doorpost
JAMESTOWN
~Difficult first year, colony almost did not survive
~John smith took control
~Found tobacco grew very well
~ Colonist that paid their own way got 50 acres of land
~Jamestown was first successful English colony
